2021 Golden Globes: 'Nomadland,' Chadwick Boseman, Jane Fonda Among Honorees - NPR

Technical difficulties and an overall uninspired program were the themes of this year's Golden Globes, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Hollywood Foreign Press Association

In any given year, awards-season viewers are doing some combination of reveling in the booze-filled loosie-goosey nature of the Golden Globes while bemoaning the ostensible arbitrariness of many of its nominees and winners. Do you recall the movie Salmon Fishing in the Yemen? (Three nods in 2012, including best picture.) And really, The Kominsky Method beat out shows like Barry and The Good Place for best TV drama in 2019? How?!

The mood going into this year's Globes ceremony was different, however, and not just because the producers had Covid-related logistics to work out for a mostly virtual event. Just a few days earlier, the Los Angeles Times published two investigations looking into the inner workings of the mysterious Hollywood Foreign Press Association, an organization of 87 "journalists" who vote on the awards. Those exposés unveiled a number of details which suggest the Globes are more frivolous (and corrupt) than even the most cynical among us may have considered. Among the reveals: a number of HFPA members were fabulously flown in to France and wined and dined for a set visit to Emily in Paris, the wildly popular but critically reviled show which received three head-scratching nominations. Also, there are currently zero Black members in the HFPA.

On Sunday night, the ceremony addressed the diversity PR nightmare head-on, first via the opening banter between returning co-hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, who were broadcast from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills and the Rainbow Room in New York City, respectively. Sprinkled in between jokes about the differences between movies and television and an acknowledgement of the pandemic first responders in the audience, were cracks about the HFPA's membership ("around 90 international — no Black — journalists," a couple of whom "might be ghosts") and a more serious admission that worthy Black performances and creators were overlooked this year.

And a bit later in the evening, three members of the HFPA emerged from obscurity to pledge that the organization felt bad about all the negativity publicity and would commit to doing better about inclusion going forward. (There was no mention of whether or not all-expenses paid trips to fancy cities on a Hollywood studio's dime was also being reconsidered.)

Once the awards-giving kicked off, it was often a bumpy ride. While presenters appeared in person in either New York or L.A., nominees attended remotely from their respective homes. The potential for technical chaos was realized almost immediately, when Daniel Kaluuya, who won the first award of the night for his role as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah, couldn't be heard while giving his acceptance speech. After a few moments, presenter Laura Dern noted the difficulties and attempted to quickly wrap up and move to the next segment; luckily, Kaluuya was able to jump back in, this time with sound in check, and deliver typically charming remarks.

YouTube

There were many more awkward sound-related issues, merely irritating and occasionally chaotic – was that acceptance speech where Catherine O'Hara, who took home an award for Schitt's Creek, kept being interrupted by her husband Bo Welch's phone, a planned bit or a kerfluffle-turned-on-the-fly bit? I'm not sure, but whatever it was, it was a rare highlight in an otherwise dull night. The producers padded the run time with skits which, even in normal times, would feel forced – saved for a perfectly weird skit involving Maya Rudolph and Kenan Thompson donning faux French accents, anything not directly related to the presentation of awards was superfluous.

The big winners of the night were a mixed bag of the surprising and predictable. Nomadland won best motion picture, drama, and its director Chloe Zhao became the first Asian woman to win the best director award – and first woman since Barbra Streisand won for Yentl nearly 40 years ago. Chadwick Boseman received a posthumous honor for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom in the best actor, drama category; his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward gave a stirring, heartbreaking speech on his behalf. Andra Day triumphed for her first feature starring role in The United States vs. Billie Holiday in a stacked category that included Viola Davis and Frances McDormand.

While Emily In Paris went home empty-handed – Netflix must be wondering, was that all-expenses paid set visit for all those HFPA members worth it after all? – crowd-pleaser The Queen's Gambit beat out Steve McQueen's transformative Small Axe for best limited series, drama. (Though John Boyega earned his first Globe win for his role in Red, White and Blue, one of the films in Small Axe.)

YouTube

The show was at its best when the veterans were involved. The 98-year-old Norman Lear was given the Carol Burnett Award for "outstanding contributions to television," and, perhaps because it was coordinated ahead of time, the TV titan had by far the sharpest audio and visual set-up of all the remote celebrities. He kept his remarks short and sweet, proving yet again that he is a national treasure. Ditto Jane Fonda, who appeared in-person at the Rainbow Room to accept the other honorary award of the evening, the Cecil B. DeMille award. In one of the most riveting moments of the night, she gave a shout out to the recent works that inspired her, including Nomadland, Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari (which won after being controversially nominated in the Best Foreign Language category) and I May Destroy You (which was notably shut out from any nominations despite its critical acclaim).

Perhaps the one saving grace of this snooze fest was that it ended under three and a half hours. But considering how much time the producers had to execute a smooth and relatively painless event – and that they could have looked to last fall's comparatively successful virtual Emmy Awards for guidance – this year's Golden Globes only further solidified the event's irrelevance, for everyone to witness.

Golden Globes 2021: ‘Nomadland,’ ‘The Crown,’ ‘Borat’ Win Top Prizes - Rolling Stone

NomadlandBorat Subsequent Moviefilm and The Crown were among the big winners at the 2021 Golden Globes.

Nomadland picked up Best Motion Picture Drama, while fillmmaker Chloé Zhao won Best Director, becoming the first woman to win that prize since Barbra Streisand in 1983 for YentlBorat Subsequent Moviefilm also won two trophies, Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for star Sacha Baron Cohen.

Other big film prizes went to Andra Day, who won Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, and Chadwick Boseman, who was posthumously awarded Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his final performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

In the world of television, The Crown, Schitt’s Creek and The Queen’s Gambit carried the night. The Crown won Best TV Series Drama for the second time, while stars Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin won Best Actor and Actress in a TV Drama for their portrayals of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and Gillian Anderson won Best Supporting Actress for playing Margaret Thatcher. Schitt’s Creek, meanwhile, won Best TV Musical or Comedy, while Catherine O’Hara  picked up Best Actress in a TV Musical or Comedy. And The Queen’s Gambit won Best Limited Series, while star Anya Taylor-Joy upset the likes of Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett for Best Actress in a Limited Series.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the primarily virtual Golden Globes, broadcasting live from New York City and Los Angeles, respectively. Despite the distance, the comedians’ chemistry was on point as ever as they breezed through a monologue that lightly roasted the nominees (save the controversial Music, which was given the scorched-earth treatment), while saving the sharpest barbs for the Globes themselves. Along with stressing the disclaimer that all awards shows, to some extent, are scams — “Invented by Big Red Carpet,” Poehler joked — they highlighted the recent revelation that the 87-member Hollywood Foreign Press Association has no black members.

“The point is, even with stupid things, inclusivity is important,” Fey said. “And there are no black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press. I realize HFPA maybe you guys didn’t get the memo because your workplace is the back booth of a French McDonalds, but you gotta change that.”

(The HFPA, for its part, made a big show later on of promising to rectify its diversity problem, though it remains to be seen exactly what changes will be put in place.)

Perhaps more than any other awards show, the Golden Globes rely heavily on the live audience factor: While awards are nice, few things are more engaging than the possibilities that arise when hundreds of celebrities are stuck in a room together with an open bar while the whole thing is broadcast live on national television. There were, however, some inspired Zoom moments that captured a bit of that feel: Olivia Colman oohing and ahhing over Sarah Paulson’s dog and Emma Corrin’s cat; Cynthia Nixon appearing with a life-size cut out of Bernie Sanders at the inauguration behind her; and David Fincher throwing back shots after Mank lost Best Screenplay and he lost Best Director.

And of course there were bits as well that tried to make the whole occasion feel a bit less surreal. O’Hara had her husband play wrap-it-up music on his phone while she accepted her award. And to capture that classic, inebriated, going-on-way-too-long Golden Globes vibe, Keenan Thompson and Maya Rudolph stepped in to play a pair of deranged songwriters accepting the award for “Least Original Song in a Telefilm Dramedy or Comma.”

As for actual awards, and actual award winners, Daniel Kaluuya won Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his portrayal of Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah (in the show’s one technical hiccup, Kaluuya appeared to be on mute when he began to give his speech but was ultimately able to deliver it successfully). Other top film winners were Rosamund Pike, who won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for I Care a Lot, and Jodie Foster, who won Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for The Mauritanian.

Disney and Pixar’s Soul picked up a pair of trophies, Best Animated Film and Best Original Score for Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Diane Warren won her second Golden Globe for Best Original Song, sharing the award with Niccolò Agliardi and Laura Pausini for “Io sì (Seen)” from The Life Ahead. The Trial of the Chicago 7 won Best Screenplay, while Minari was awarded Best Foreign Language Film

Jason Sudeikis notched probably the most unexpected win of the night, picking up Best Actor in a TV Musical or Comedy for Ted Lasso (his incredulous reaction was topped only by his tie-dye hoodie). Elsewhere, John Boyega won Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series for his turn in the Small Axe installment, Red, White and Blue, and Mark Ruffalo won Best Actor in a Limited Series for This Much is True.

The night also featured two honorary prizes for television and film. The Carol Burnett Award went to television legend Norman Lear, while the Cecil B. DeMille Award was given to actress and activist Jane Fonda.

Lawyer Seeks Sexual Abuse Investigation Against T.I. and Tiny - Yahoo Entertainment

A lawyer representing nearly a dozen people is calling for a sexual abuse investigation against rapper T.I. and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Harris.

In a letter sent to state and federal authorities in Georgia and California, lawyer Tyrone A. Blackburn, who is representing the 11 “victimized” people, alleged “sexual abuse, forced ingestion of illegal narcotics, kidnapping, terroristic threats and false imprisonment” against the rapper (birth name Clifford Harris) and his wife spanning from 2005 to 2018, the New York Times reports.

Five of the victims cited in the letters claimed they were raped or sexually assaulted by the couple. One of the women, a military veteran, says she was drugged by the couple after meeting them at a club; she was later taken to their hotel room — experiencing the effects of the alleged drugging — where she claimed Tiny bathed her and T.I., and the three then engaged in sex, during which the woman vomited.

“The next thing she remembers was waking up naked on the couch, with a towel thrown over her, with a very sore vagina,” the letter states. Friends of the woman corroborated her story to the Times.

In a statement to Rolling Stone, the couple’s lawyer Steve Sadow said, “Clifford (T.I.) and Tameka Harris deny in the strongest possible terms these unsubstantiated and baseless allegations. We are confident that if these claims are thoroughly and fairly investigated, no charges will be forthcoming. These allegations are nothing more than the continuation of a sordid shakedown campaign that began on social media. The Harrises implore everyone not to be taken in by these obvious attempts to manipulate the press and misuse the justice system.”

After multiple women shared their accusations of sexual abuse against T.I. and Tiny on social media — including Sabrina Peterson, who in January accused T.I. of putting a gun to her head in an Instagram post. She then used her account to share statements from over 30 women who claimed they had been drugged, coerced or forced into sex, and trafficked by the Harrises — production was halted on the fourth season of the couple’s VH1. reality show T.I. and Tiny: Friends and Family Hustle. Blackburn told the Times that none of his clients were among the women who alleged sexual abuse on social media.

A spokesperson for MTV Entertainment said, “We are aware of the allegations, and while they are not connected to our show, we have reached out to T.I. and Tameka Harris, as well as local and state officials. Given the serious nature of the allegations, we have decided to suspend production in order to gather more information.”

T.I.’s spokesperson said in a statement, “Mr. and Mrs. Harris want to be on record and more importantly want the public to know they emphatically deny in the strongest way possible the egregiously appalling allegations being made against them by Sabrina Peterson. The Harrises have had difficulty with this woman for well over a decade. They are taking this matter very seriously, and if these allegations don’t end, they will take appropriate legal action.”

T.I. himself addressed the allegations in a January 29th eight-minute video posted on Instagram. “We vehemently deny ALL these disgusting, anonymous allegations,” the rapper wrote, saying that while “women who have been victimized deserve to be heard… however, evil has no gender. People with evil intentions have no gender. A threat comes in all shapes and sizes. I would never treat a woman the same way I would treat a threat.”

Golden Globes winners 2021: The full list - Vox.com

The winners of the 2021 Golden Globes were crowned on Sunday night, in a bicoastal and bizarrely produced ceremony hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

There were awkward Zoom moments aplenty. There were several uncomfortable but necessary mentions of the lack of diversity among this year’s nominees and within the notoriously corrupt organization that hands out the Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. And in between, a variety of television shows and movies won new trophies!

On the TV side, Netflix drama The Crown was the winningest show of the evening, taking home four statuettes, including Best TV Series – Drama. It was joined on the winners list by its Netflix sibling The Queen’s Gambit, which won Best Limited TV Series, as well as Best Actress in a TV Drama for star Anya Taylor-Joy. And in the TV comedy categories, the beloved Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek capped off its sweep at last year’s Emmys with one more victory lap for its final season, winning Best TV Series and Best Actress for Catherine O’Hara.

On the film side, several movies won two Globes apiece. Searchlight Pictures’ Nomadland earned one for Best Motion Picture – Drama and one for director Chloé Zhao. Amazon Studios’ Borat Subsequent Moviefilm won Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, and its star Sacha Baron Cohen won Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. And Pixar’s Soul won Best Animated Motion Picture and Best Original Score. The rest of the film awards were fairly spread out: Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, I Care A Lot, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 all took home awards, as did HBO Max’s Judas and the Black Messiah, STXfilms’ The Mauritanian, and A24’s Minari.

Despite recent controversies and their reputation as the goofiest major entertainment industry awards show, the Golden Globes have long functioned as a prominent kickoff to Hollywood’s annual awards season. That’s still true in this atypical year. Though the 2021 edition of the Globes happened two months later than usual thanks to the pandemic, they still took place shortly before the close of Oscar voting and several weeks ahead of the Covid-19-delayed Oscar ceremony, which is slated for April 25. Thus, the Globes maintain their not-really-but-sometimes status as an Oscar indicator.

Meghan Markle dazzles in $4,700 Armani dress for Oprah interview - Page Six

The first look at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s upcoming tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey has arrived — and for the occasion, the Duchess of Sussex certainly dressed to impress.

For her sit-down with the talk-show icon, a teaser for which aired Sunday night, 39-year-old Markle donned a $4,700 black gown by Armani with a belted waist and foliage embroidery.

Unsurprisingly, her exact style is already sold out, but a similar (albeit embellished) version is still available for the same price.

Along with her signature messy bun, the Duchess accessorized with her favorite suede Aquazzura pumps ($695) and Cartier Love bracelet ($6,550), along with an aquamarine necklace by Pippa Small and blue topaz Birks earrings, both of which are now sold out.

But the real crown jewel of Markle’s ensemble? Her dainty diamond bracelet, believed to be a Cartier heirloom once owned by Princess Diana.

Incidentally, 36-year-old Prince Harry’s late mother looks to be a major talking point of the upcoming interview; at one point in the teaser, he tells Winfrey, “My biggest concern was history repeating itself.”

Continues the Duke of Sussex in the clip, “You know, for me, I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago. Because it has been unbelievably tough for the two of us but at least we had each other.”

Winfrey’s CBS interview with the Sussexes, during which the pair will open up about their decision to leave the royal family and move to California, will air in a two-hour exclusive primetime special on Sunday, March 7.

Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Really Roasted The Hell Out Of The Golden Globes - BuzzFeed News

NBC

Tina Fey in New York City and Amy Poehler in Beverly Hills.

How do you host an awards show held during a pandemic for films that most people couldn't see in theaters and which completely overlooked nominating a widely acclaimed TV series led by a Black woman?

By absolutely burning the whole damn thing down.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler — hosting jointly but from New York City and Beverly Hills, respectively — decided to roast the hell out of the Golden Globes on Sunday night, using their opening monologue to lean into the controversies that have dogged the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group of international journalists who hand out the awards and who have a reputation for being, well, star-fuckers.

"The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is made up of around 90 international, no-Black journalists who attend movie junkets each year in search for a better life," said Fey.

The HFPA has in recent days drawn the ire of celebrities for the fact that the group hasn't had a Black member in some 20 years. Stars and Hollywood moguls including Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Jennifer Aniston, Sterling K. Brown, Kerry Washington, and Ellen Pompeo have shared messages on social media saying that "Time's Up" for the HFPA to do more in terms of diversity.

The Golden Globes also was scorned this year for ignoring Michaela Coel’s critically acclaimed TV series I May Destroy You, while favoring less well received shows like Emily In Paris after 30 HFPA were flown to Paris by Netflix to visit the show's set, where they were put up in $1,400-a-night hotel rooms and treated "like kings and queens," according to the Los Angeles Times.

"Emily In Paris is nominated for Best TV Series Musical Or Comedy, and I, for one, cannot wait to find out which it is," joked Fey. "French Exit is what I did after watching the first episode of Emily in Paris."

This week, the HFPA pledged to immediately work to bring in more members who are Black or from underrepresented backgrounds. They also said that the issue would be addressed on Sunday's show — and it was.

"Everybody is understandably upset at the HFPA and their choices," Poehler said. "Look, a lot of flashy garbage got nominated, but that happens. That's, like, their thing. But a number of Black actors and Black-led projects were overlooked."

"Look, we all know award shows are stupid," Fey said.

"They're all a scam invented by Big Red Carpet," joked Poehler.

"The point is, even with stupid things, inclusivity is important and there are no Black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press," Fey said. "I realize, HFPA, maybe you guys didn't get the memo because your workplace is a back booth of a French McDonald's, but you gotta change that."

Fey was the subject of some debate in recent months for her work in the movie Soul, which featured Disney Pixar's first Black lead character, but drew criticism because he was quickly transported into the body of a cat.

"Soul is a beautiful Pixar animated movie where a middle aged Black man's soul accidentally gets knocked out of his body and into a cat," said Fey in her opening monologue. "The HFPA really responded to this movie because they do have five cat members."

While a few stars served as presenters at Sunday's show, the nominees all stayed home due to the coronavirus pandemic and winners were promised they would receive their awards in the coming days.

Most nominees still dressed up for the ceremony, wearing dresses and tuxedos, but others, like Billy Murray, opted for a quarantine casual look.

Fey and Poehler also decided to acknowledge the coronavirus-sized elephant in the room: most US theaters have been closed for a year so it's been a little difficult for us viewers to tell the difference between TV and movies.

"It's hard to tell them apart because movie theaters were closed and we watched everything on our phones," Poehler said.

"Now, TV is the one that I watch five hours straight," she added, "but a movie is the one that I don't turn on because it's two hours. I don't want to be in front of my TV for two hours. I want to be in front of the TV for one hour five times."

And much like your Zoom calls this past year, the show featured some embarrassing audio moments.

Unlike the Emmys, Sunday's Globes did feature a live audience for Fey and Poehler to play off of, with a few masked first responders and essential workers invited to sit in the seats normally reserved for big stars.

"We are so grateful for the work that you do," said Fey, "and that you are here so that the celebrities can stay safely at home."

First look at Meghan and Harry's astonishing tell-all with Oprah - Page Six

Meghan Markle is poised to say that life in the royal family was “almost unsurvivable” in an astonishing tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The first glimpse of Winfrey’s CBS interview with Markle and husband Prince Harry aired Sunday night during an ad break for “60 Minutes.”

And what the couple tell Winfrey is so sensational that the legendary host says, “You’ve said some pretty shocking things here … wait, hold up, wait a minute.”

Cradling her middle, pregnant Markle — who doesn’t speak in the trailer — looks at the billionaire media mogul as Winfrey asks her, “Were you silent or were you silenced?”

Winfrey adds, “I just want to make it clear to everybody there is no subject that’s off limits.”

In another moment, she says to Markle, “Almost unsurvivable sounds like there was a breaking point.”

Dressed in a belted Giorgio Armani gown that retails for $4,700, and with her hair pulled away from her face, Markle, 39, is then joined by her 36-year-old husband.

The pair clutches hands as Harry, who has frequently spoken of his heartbreak at the death of his mother Princess Diana — tells Winfrey, “My biggest concern was history repeating itself.”

Speaking further on his mother, who in her famous 1995 BBC interview with Martin Bashir broke her silence on Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, Harry makes it clear that he is still agonized over her passing.

He says, “You know, for me, I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago.

“Because it has been unbelievably tough for the two of us but at least we had each other.”

Winfrey’s interview has been extended to a two-hour exclusive primetime special to air Sunday, March 7.

The pair will speak on their decision to leave the royal family and move to California with their baby son Archie.

A source told Page Six of the tell-all, “It is in-depth and fascinating.”

Lawyer Seeks Sexual Abuse Investigation Against T.I. and Tiny - Rolling Stone

Who returned Lady Gaga's stolen dogs? - Fox News

Lady Gaga has been reunited with her two French bulldogs thanks to an anonymous good Samaritan who found them in Los Angeles.

The performer's dog walker, Ryan Fischer, was shot once as he walked three of the singer's dogs in Hollywood. Video showed a white sedan pulling up and two men jumping out. They struggled with the dog walker before one pulled a gun and fired a single shot before fleeing with two of the dogs. The third escaped and has since been reunited with Lady Gaga's representatives.

On Saturday, the LAPD confirmed that a woman brought the dogs to its Olympic Community Police station around 6 p.m. Because the singer is currently in Rome, her representatives joined detectives at the station and confirmed that the woman did indeed have the two dogs with her.

Capt. Jonathan Tippet, commanding officer of the department's elite Robbery-Homicide Division noted that the woman, whose identity is being kept a secret as the investigation into the crime continues, does not appear to be involved in the crime or associated with the criminals in any way.

LADY GAGA'S DAD PLEADS FOR PUBLIC'S HELP AFTER HER DOG WALKER SHOT, DOGS STOLEN: 'HELP US CATCH THESE CREEPS'

"The woman found the dogs and reached out to Lady Gaga's staff to return them.  The woman’s identity and the location the dogs were found will remain confidential due to the active criminal investigation and for her safety," a post on the LAPD’s Facebook page reads.

TMZ reports that the woman found the dogs unharmed and tied to a pole in an alley several miles from where they were initially snatched in Hollywood. Once she discovered the dogs, she reached out to an email address provided by police for tips and then coordinated to bring them into the station.

LADY GAGA'S FATHER ON HER INAUGURATION PERFORMANCE: 'I'M STILL VERY PROUD OF HER'

Gaga previously offered a $500,000 reward for the safe return of her dogs, whose names are Koji and Gustav. It’s unclear if the woman who found them has accepted the offer but TMZ reports that a source says the singer and actress will "gladly" shell out the money as soon as she can.

Representatives for Gaga did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

Earlier on Saturday, the "Born This Way" singer's father, Joe Germanotta, shared his relief in the dogs' safe return. However, he still demands justice and is hoping the police will nab the two suspects, one of which authorities say shot Gaga's dog walker.

"I want them apprehended so that they are tried for assault and/or attempted murder," Joe Germanotta told us Saturday morning.

The dog walker -- whom Gaga has named in a tweet, but that the LAPD has not publicly identified yet -- was transported to a local hospital after the incident. He's since been listed in stable condition after the shooting and his injuries are being described as non-life threatening.

See ‘SNL’ Turn Covid-19 Vaccine Eligibility Into Game Show Hosted by Dr. Fauci - Rolling Stone

With many Americans confused about who is eligible for Covid-19 vaccines — and millions more who are eligible for the shots unable to book an appointment — Saturday Night Live’s cold open turned the nation’s vaccine rollout into a game show hosted by Kate McKinnon’s Dr. Fauci.

The vaccine rollout is going strong but it’s also very confusing: Who can get it? How? When? Where is it? Do both doses go in the same arm or different arms, I don’t know,” the host said in the sketch.

“So tonight, we give everyday Americans the chance to vie for vaccine eligibility on a little show called So You Think You Can Get the Vaccine.”

McKinnon’s Fauci added, “Getting the vaccine shouldn’t be a competition but Americans will only want to get it if someone else can’t.”

Fauci next introduced his panel of judges, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom (Alex Moffat), New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo (Pete Davidson) — “Currently under fire for futzing with old dead people and also for the kind of sexual harassment allegations that make you go, ‘Yeah, I can see that’,” Fauci said of Cuomo — and Michigan’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer (Cicely Strong).

The game show then welcomed a parade of contestants: A woman claiming to be an essential worker (she does IT for OnlyFans), another woman pretending to be elderly, a “proud smoker from New Jersey” (where smokers are now eligible), a pregnant woman who questions genuinely whether she can have the vaccine, and penultimately Ted Cruz (Aidy Bryant), fresh from his appearance at CPAC.

The judges finally encounter an old man worthy of the vaccine and award him his prize: The opportunity to schedule a vaccine appointment online, which the old man doesn’t know how to do.

Fauci then announces, “I’m just getting word: The power went out at a CVS nearby, the vaccines are all going to expire, so it’s first come, first stab.”

Box Office: ‘Tom and Jerry’ Opens to Surprisingly Strong $13.7 Million, Giving Movie Theaters Hope - Variety

Warner Bros.’ animated family film “Tom and Jerry” debuted to $13.7 million at the domestic box office, one of the biggest opening weekend hauls of the coronavirus era and a signal that moviegoing may be on the mend.

To be sure, it’ll take some time for ticket sales to reach pre-pandemic levels. But second to “Wonder Woman 1984,” which launched in December with $16.7 million, “Tom and Jerry” had the most robust three-day total since movie theaters reopened in the middle of last year. Nothing else that has been released in the past 10 months has been able to crack the $10 million-mark; “The Croods: A New Age” ($9.7 million) and “Tenet” ($9.35 million) were the only others to come close to that benchmark.

“Tom and Jerry” — directed by Tim Story and starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña and Colin Jost — played in 2,475 theaters in North America. Overall, 42% of cinemas in the country have reopened, according to Comscore.

Notably, “Tom and Jerry” also premiered on the HBO Max streaming service, where it will be available to subscribers for 31 days. Beginning with the “Wonder Woman” sequel, Warner Bros. has set 18 movies to bow simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max due to the pandemic.

Overseas, the cartooned adventure about the iconic cat and mouse rivalry has made $25 million from 33 countries for a global tally of $38.8 million. Given current conditions, it’s considered a strong start for the $79 million-budgeted “Tom and Jerry.”

Box office analysts appear to be optimistic about those numbers. “With half of theaters still closed, the pandemic still a threat and ‘Tom & Jerry’ available at home, this is a very good opening,” said David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “[It’s] a positive sign for the business and for theatrical’s pull over home entertainment.”

Of the films that have been released during the pandemic (a fraction of the amount that would typically grace the big screen in normal times), those geared toward younger audiences have reaped the biggest rewards. Warner Bros. said ticket sales for “Tom and Jerry” were fueled by family crowds buying private theater rentals.

“There’s undoubtedly an element of cabin fever among parents and kids at play with these successful family movies during the pandemic, but I also think we’re looking at the beginnings of a larger trend,” said Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Box Office Pro. “As virus cases decline, vaccines roll out, and more mainstream films start releasing, families are growing more comfortable with the idea of going back to the movies while practicing safe health measures such as mask-wearing and social distancing.”

Looking ahead, Robbins notes, it should bode well for Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon,” which is premiering concurrently in theaters and on Disney Plus (for a premium fee) next weekend.

“With all due caution, though,” Robbins said, “‘Tom and Jerry’s’ ability to exceed expectations despite a day-and-date streaming release, and without the biggest markets open, signals yet another positive step forward for the industry as a whole.”

In other encouraging box office news, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo gave permission for cinemas in the five boroughs to reopen at limited capacity starting on March 5. It’s been nearly a year since New York City movie theaters have been able to welcome patrons, which is partially why studios have opted to delay nearly all of their biggest movies. Theaters in the area will have to operate at 25% capacity, making it difficult to reach profitability, but film exhibitors believe it’s a positive step in repairing the battered movie industry.

“Open theaters, plus new movies, are the formula that will bring the theatrical marketplace back to life,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst with Comscore. “This is most encouraging given the daunting and unprecedented challenges of the past year.”

With the opening of “Tom and Jerry,” box office mainstay “The Croods: A New Age,” playing in 1912 venues, slid to second place and collected $1.2 million. The Universal Pictures and DreamWorks animated sequel has become an unlikely coronavirus-era hit, generating $52 million to date.

Otherwise, none of the films in the top five were able to reach $1 million in ticket sales. “The Little Things,” in its fifth weekend of release, came the closest and nabbed $925,000 from 1,853 locations. The Warner Bros. thriller, starring Denzel Washington, Jared Leto and Rami Malek, has grossed $12.9 million in the U.S. and Canada and $10.3 million internationally for a worldwide total of $23.2 million.

“Wonder Woman 1984” came in fourth place, pulling in $710,000 from 1,538 locations. The superhero sequel has made $43.6 million since debuting more than two months ago. It has done markedly better business overseas, where it has generated $117.4 million. Liam Neeson’s action thriller “The Marksman” rounded out the top five with $700,000, boosting its total to $12.345 million.

The Golden Globes' weirdest nominations: Sia's 'Music' and more - New York Post

It’s a cherished American tradition: Once a year, we come together to question the integrity and taste of the Golden Globe Awards. And in 2021, the ceremony honoring film and TV has given us plenty of strange choices to whine about.

Last week, it was revealed that the Netflix show “Emily in Paris” reportedly flew ⅓ of the 90-person Globes voting bloc to Paris and put them up in the $1,400-a-night Peninsula hotel for a junket. The chic trip to the City of Lights might have helped net the show two nominations, including best comedy series.

Meanwhile, Sia’s nominated film “Music” is awash in controversy for its happy-go-lucky portrayal of autism. And to cap it all off, it was reported just days ago that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the ceremony, has zero black members. A banner year!

But the Globes have long provoked skepticism and outrage for its shady dealings and cuckoo picks. Here are some of the weirdest Golden Globes choices ever.

Pia Zadora in “Butterfly”

A mystery still not fully explained is Pia Zadora’s new star of the year award in 1982 for her performance in the critically eviscerated drama “Butterfly.” The tawdry film is about an Arizona man (Stacy Keach) who starts up an incestuous relationship with his long-lost daughter Kady (Zadora), who just so happens to be super into that kind of thing. Gross. Times critic Vincent Canby said the newcomer’s sexualized performance was “like a Brigitte Bardot who’s been recycled through a kitchen compactor.”

When Zadora got the award, some lobbed accusations that her then-husband, Israeli billionaire ‎Meshulam Riklis, swayed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association by hosting a lavish press junket at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, which he owned.

Still, she maintains she won her trophy fair and square. A few months later, her performance would also fairly earn her the Golden Raspberry Award for worst actress.

“Scent of a Woman”

“Scent of a Woman” controversially won Best Motion Picture – Drama after voters got to meet Al Pacino.

Nobody would call “Scent of a Woman” a bad movie. It received Oscar nods, too, and Al Pacino rightly won an Academy Award for playing a blind lieutenant colonel. But it was never the season front-runner. (It competed against “A Few Good Men,” “Howard’s End,” “The Crying Game” and “Unforgiven,” which ultimately won the Oscar for Best Picture). So, when the film snagged the 1993 Golden Globe for best drama film, the HFPA found themselves in the midst of yet another controversy. Hollywood insiders were irate when it was revealed that many voters were flown out to New York to meet Pacino during the voting process. And nobody involved would say who paid for the starry jaunt.

Halle Berry (“Frankie & Alice”)

Another criticism frequently faced by the Globes is that it nominates stars solely to get them on the red carpet — A-list talent in D-list duds. That definitely tracks for Halle Berry’s 2011 best actress in a drama film nod for “Frankie & Alice.” The small Canadian movie about a stripper with a murderous split personality was skewered by critics, although some praised Berry’s work. Stranger still, most Americans weren’t able to see it. While “Frankie & Alice” had a limited release in 2010 to qualify for awards, its wide release was shelved till 2014.

“The Martian”

What was the funniest part of “The Martian”? Was it when Matt Damon’s astronaut was stranded on Mars, seemingly destined to die alone? Or when he managed to grow potatoes to stave off starvation? Perhaps it was his harrowing final maneuver to reach the crew sent to rescue him. What was your favorite song in the movie? Oh, right, there weren’t any. All of the above is why people were scratching their heads when “The Martian” was nominated for — and won! — the “best motion picture — musical or comedy” prize in 2016. It edged out actual, um, comedies, such as “The Big Short,” “Joy,” “Spy” and “Trainwreck.”

Johnny Depp (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”)

For a solid 20 years, the slobbering HFPA would have nominated Johnny Depp for taking a walk around the block. From 1991 to 2011, the actor received a mammoth 10 Golden Globe nominations. Compare that to his lifetime three Oscar nods. Crazier than the sheer amount, though, were the projects themselves, including 2005’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” in which he played Willy Wonka like a Wisconsin drugstore clerk; 2010’s “Alice in Wonderland,” with his flame-haired Mad Hatter; and, worst of them all, “The Tourist,” also in 2010.

“The Tourist”

Critics absolutely slammed “The Tourist,” which was a remake of a 2005 French film, but it still managed a best musical or comedy film Globe nomination and undeserved acting nods for Depp and Angelina Jolie, who had an icy lack of chemistry. The inclusion was so roundly criticized, host Ricky Gervais mocked it in his monologue.

“It was a big year for 3-D movies,” he said. ” ‘Toy Story,’ ‘Despicable Me,’ ‘Tron’ — seems like everything this year was three-dimensional, except the characters in ‘The Tourist.’ “

Piling on, Gervais added: “I feel bad about that joke, because I’m jumping on the bandwagon. I haven’t even seen ‘The Tourist.’ Who has? But it must be good, because it was nominated.”

“Burlesque”

Remember when Christina Aguilera gave acting a shot? If you answered, “No,” you’re lucky. In 2010, she played an aspiring performer who moves to LA to make it big, only to wind up working in a basement-not-quite-strip-joint run by Cher. The Post’s critic Lou Lumenick said of Aguilera’s turn, “Her acting debut isn’t going to keep Anne Hathaway awake at night.” Still, it managed three Golden Globe nods, including best comedy or musical film.

John C. Reilly (“Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story”)

You can bet your bottom dollar that John C. Reilly never dreamed of or anticipated receiving honors for his musical stylings. Leave it to the Globes to get there first. Reilly wrote the song for his character in 2007’s “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story,” a comedic parody of Johnny Cash. The tune is perfectly fine, but has lyrics such as, “You know when I was a boy, folks used to say to me, ‘Slow down, Dewey, don’t walk so hard.’ ” Reilly ultimately lost to Eddie Vedder.

Robin Williams (“Patch Adams”)

Robin Williams was one of our greatest comedic actors, but “Patch Adams” was easily one of his worst films. In the comedy, he played a suicidal man who becomes a medical student and questions the traditional doctor-patient interactions. He’d rather yuk it up instead. But, as Gene Siskel put it, “Who would want Mork at their bedside?” The film was an awkward mix of lowbrow jokes and extreme sentimentality, and Williams’ performance was cranked up to 11. Naturally, the Golden Globes nominated him for best actor in a comedy or musical film, as well as the lousy movie itself.
