Cobra Kai season 4 ending explained as Karate Kid 3 fave returns - digitalspy.com

Cobra Kai season 4 spoilers ahead

It’s time for the All-Valley karate tournament and the decades-old battle between Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do is finally coming to a head... with some unexpected consequences.

At the end of season three, it was agreed whichever team won the tournament would take control of the valley, the other dojo closing down forever.

But with bitter rivalries refusing to die and trick tactics bringing out the worst in people, it seems the series could result in putting everyone in more danger.

So what exactly happened?

Here’s what you need to know…

The Fall

Despite their efforts to work together, Johnny and Daniel’s 37-year rivalry proved too difficult to overcome, even to take down bully sensei Kreese.

So at the start of the All Valley tournament, there are three key dojos for viewers in play – Kreese’s Cobra Kai, Daniel’s Miyagi-Do and Johnny’s Eagle Fang.

Kreese has extra help in Terry Silver, his twisted and power-hungry best friend from Vietnam, who since coming out of retirement wasted no time in going back to his cruel and callous ways.

But things are different at this All Valley, with three potential ways to win – specialty, female, and male champion crowns. An overall dojo wins on a point system.

Cobra Kai takes the lead after the specialities, with Miyagi-Do in second and Eagle Fang falling to sixth place.

After a musical interlude by Carrie Underwood, the qualifiers begin, with Miyagi-Do and Cobra Kai remaining the top contenders, but Daniel soon realises Cobra Kai has a bigger advantage than they thought, with Robby having taught his new team Miyagi’s signature key moves to get one up in the competition.

By the time the quarter finals roll around, Eagle Fang are almost completely out of the running, and it's down to Miguel to win to keep them in the game.

Miyagi-Do is faring slightly better, with Demetri going through to the semis, but Eli (formerly Hawk) is having a crisis of confidence after an attack from the Cobra Kai’s saw them shave his mohawk off.

But, with a pep talk and kiss from his girlfriend, he’s revived, and faces off on the mat against his biggest bully, Kyler. Defeating him, he’s through to the semis too.

Samantha also makes it through to the next round, after going against Miyagi-Do protocol to be defence only, and surprising her opponent with Eagle Fang attack moves.

Daniel chastises Sam for not winning "the right way" but she tells him not everyone’s "right way" is the same as his.

As for Cobra Kai, Tory is sent through to the semis, but Robby is forced to compete against his teammate, the newcomer Kenny. He wins, but his viciousness gets the better of him after a pep talk from Kreese and he winds up almost breaking the youngster’s nose with a kick to the face. Feeling guilty, his underlying doubts about Cobra Kai start to surface.

In the semi-finals, Eli and Miguel go head to head, but the match is derailed when Miguel collapses in agony on the mat.

After breaking his back in the season-two school brawl, he’s over-exerted himself, and is rushed to get medical attention.

Thankfully it’s just a pulled muscle, and he’s advised to be wary about re-entering the competition. Johnny wants him to continue but Miguel is clearly shaken and uncertain.

Back in the tournament, Demetri is knocked out by Robby. Samantha and Tory both win, getting sent through to the female finals against each other.

In the changing rooms, Anthony LaRusso tries to talk to Kenny, apologising for bullying him earlier in the year in an attempt to clear the air.

But Kenny, having been warped by Cobra Kai from a sweet and loving kid to a vicious fighting machine, instead vents his anger at losing in the tournament onto Anthony, brutally beating him until Robby comes in to break it up.

Unapologetic, Kenny leaves, and Robby realises his protegé has been corrupted by the teachings of Cobra Kai.

Kreese reaches out to Johnny and tries to rationalise with him. Kreese claims he cared about Johnny "more than anyone", saying he feared for Johnny spiralling if he was to lose the tournament.

Ignoring him, Johnny heads to Miguel to give him a pep talk to get him back in the game. Unknown to him though, Miguel is struggling emotionally over Johnny, seeing him like a father figure but feeling let down by him.

He refuses to compete, and as a result Eli is sent through to the final by default.

The final countdown

First on the mat – Eli (Miyagi-Do) and Robby (Cobra Kai). As both previously trained at the opposing dojo, they prove to be quite the match, running out the clock as they fight.

As a result, they're forced to continue into sudden death, meaning first strike wins. Robby at one point gains the upper hand, but hesitates after seeing Kenny on the sidelines. Eli eventually comes out on top, being crowned champion and putting Miyagi-Do in the lead at the All Valley.

Ahead of the female finals, Amanda LaRusso goes to speak to Tory, telling her she hopes the fight will finally end the war with her daughter Samantha. She requests Tory play fairly. In response, Tory thanks Amanda for helping her secretly get back on her feet with a therapist and a job so she could support her sick mum.

It seems the tournament has allowed Daniel and Johnny to bury the hatchet too. Knowing what’s on the line, the pair realise they need each others’ skills in order to be the best.

In the fight, Samantha surprises Tory by fighting aggressively, incorporating Eagle Fang aggressive training with Miyagi-Do defence. The result is a fairly even match, with both gaining the upper hand at separate points. At one point, Tory elbows Samantha in the eye by accident, something that's encouraged by Silver. His eagerness for her to cheat unnerves Kreese, as he realises it's the exact pressure he put on Johnny all those years ago. He tells Tory to do what she wants.

Tory eventually wins, meaning Cobra Kai win the tournament. With that, Silver announces plans to franchise Cobra Kai throughout the valley, meaning the bullying message could soon spread.

But as Tory celebrates her win, she overhears Silver paying off the referee, who had deliberately overlooked strikes that could have seen Samantha, and Miyagi-Do, win instead.

What comes next

Driving home, Johnny notices the Cobra Kai dojo up for lease and boarded up. He heads over there to take a minute to himself. Soon, an upset Robby appears with seemingly the same idea.

The warring father/son finally have a much-needed heart-to-heart, with Johnny telling him not to take his loss too personally. Robby admits he’s worried about Kenny, who he’d hoped to mentor, turning so bitter with rage.

Realising he had a similar anger, Robby breaks down and admits he is sick of blaming Johnny for everything that goes wrong, but fears it’s too late. Johnny reassures him it isn’t, and the two embrace, reconciling after so much trouble.

Kreese and Silver spend time together to toast their win, during which Silver questions why his fellow sensei went so lightly on Tory at the finals.

Chalking it down to "going soft", Silver tells Kreese his biggest weakness has always been Johnny, and since Vietnam, Silver’s has always been Kreese.

Deciding to "cut out his weakness", Silver shows his true colours... just as the police pull up to arrest Kreese.

Silver had beat up wannabe Cobra Kai member Stingray to within an inch of his life, and told him to pin the attack on Kreese to prove his loyalty. As a result, Kreese is arrested for attempted murder.

As he's walked away in handcuffs, the Cobra Kai legacy, the potential franchise, and the power of the dojo, is left in the hands of the twisted, celebrating Silver.

In his final words, Silver says he’s "bringing in some old friends" and will "take care of Johnny", which doesn’t sound good. Potentially, it could see the return of another former Cobra Kai, Mike Barnes.

At the end of the episode, Johnny discovers Miguel has run away, heading to Mexico to find his real father. But mum Carmen reveals Miguel’s father wasn’t only abusive, he also doesn’t know Miguel exists, as she fled when she was pregnant.

A New Ally

Daniel is seen at Mr Miyagi’s grave, talking about how, despite trying his best in the most honourable way, he lost.

But he adds he doesn’t want to close Miyagi-Do, as he “doesn’t want to honour an agreement with men who have none”.

With Cobra Kai growing and getting stronger, Daniel declares he’s decided to "go offence".

"I know this isn’t your fight, and this is a lot to ask, but will you help me finally put an end to Cobra Kai?"" he asks, and with that, the camera pans to reveal the return of foe-turned-friend from Karate Kid III, Chozen Toguchi.

With that, the pair bow to Miyagi’s grave, and get to work.

Cobra Kai is available now on Netflix.

Inside the Ending of ‘No Time to Die’: Daniel Craig and Filmmaking Team Discuss the Shocking Conclusion - Variety

SPOILER WARNING: This story discusses the ending of “No Time to Die,” currently available for digital rental and purchase. Please do not read if you have not seen the film.

If audiences knew anything walking into “No Time to Die,” it was that Daniel Craig’s fifth movie as James Bond — and the 25th (official) Bond movie ever — was also Craig’s final film as the dashing secret agent. On its face, this wasn’t unusual: Originated by Sean Connery in 1962’s “Dr. No,” Bond has been played by six actors over the past 59 years, keeping the Bond movies perpetually alive as the longest running movie franchise in cinema history.

What most audiences were not expecting, however, was how Craig concluded his tenure as Agent 007.

In the film, the main villain, Lyutsifer Safin (Rami Malek), comes into possession of Heracles, a microscopic weapon designed by the British government to target a specific person through DNA-directed nanorobots. They can pass harmlessly though anyone, often unwittingly, just by skin-to-skin contact, and Safin has modified the weapon to attack the DNA of whole families. Even worse, he’s manufactured mass quantities on his secret island compound, with the intent of killing millions of people.

With no known countermeasure or cure for Heracles, Bond orders a missile strike on Safin’s island, and then battles a small army of Safin’s goons to ensure the missiles reach their target. But then Safin intervenes, and infects both of them with a specific strain of the Heracles virus designed to kill Bond’s great love Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) — and any of her relatives, including Mathilde (Lisa-Dorah Sonnet), her and Bond’s 5-year-old daughter.

If Bond leaves the island, he would effectively doom Madeleine and Mathilde to a gruesome death once the Heracles virus inevitably passed from him to them. Faced with an impossible choice, Bond stays and dies in the missile strike.

Although the creator of James Bond, novelist Ian Fleming, has tried to kill off the character in his books, it is the first time Bond has ever died on screen — a massive twist for a franchise that has thrived on the promise that James Bond will return, always.

Remarkably, however, Bond’s death remained effectively unspoiled for most audiences seeing the film. That is at least in part because Craig, director Cary Joji Fukunaga, and longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have remained quiet about the film’s ending — until now.

For a Variety Streaming Room conversation recorded in early December, Craig, Fukunaga, Broccoli and Wilson spoke for the first time in length about the decision to kill off Craig’s Bond. Below is an edited transcript of that part of the conversation.

The rest of the awards season Q&A — including how the filmmakers mined the rich history of James Bond movies, from production design and score to screenplay and performance, for “No Time to Die” — will debut on Jan. 6.

You all did something that’s never happened in a James Bond movie before: He dies in this film. Was that something you knew you wanted to do from the start?

Michael G. Wilson: If you’re saying the start of when is the question.

Daniel Craig: I’m going to tell a story here, whether or not anybody remembers it or agrees with it. But it was 2006. Barbara and I were sitting in the back of a car driving away from the Berlin premiere of “Casino Royale.” Everything was going well. People liked the movie. And it looked like I was gonna get a chance to make at least another movie. I said to Barbara, “How many of these movies do I have to make?” Because I don’t really look at contracts or any of those things. And she said, “Four,” and I went, “Oh, okay. Can I kill him off in the last one?” And she didn’t pause. She said, “Yes.” So I struck a deal with her back then and said, “That’s the way I’d like it to go.” It’s the only way I could see for myself to end it all and to make it like that was my tenure, someone else could come and take over. She stuck to her guns.

Barbara Broccoli: And I had go and tell Michael and we waited to tell the studio! [Laughs] We wanted to get rid of him. That was the reality. It was like, make sure that this was the way that we get rid of Daniel.

Craig: When he goes, he can’t come back was really what it boils down to.

So what was that conversation between you two like, Barbara and Michael, about how this is something Daniel wants to do and we’ve never done it before?

Wilson: Well, I…uh…

Craig: Well, listen, listen, it was “no” for a long time. Don’t worry. I thought it was forgotten about, put it that way. I didn’t bring it back up again until this one.

Wilson: But I think what happened was, at the end of the fourth one, we wanted Daniel back and he was very reluctant. I think we thought, all of us had thought, that that was the best way to end this whole thing. Now, you know, it wasn’t unusual, because Fleming, he tried to kill him off in “From Russia With Love,” and almost killed him off in “You Only Live Twice.” But I think it’s the fitting way to deal with a situation where a person is risking their life all the time. Eventually, the odds catch up with you. I think Fleming saw it and I guess ultimately we came to that realization, too. It’s also emotionally very important to understand the risks that people like Bond engage in.

There’s also the risk of the audience response. There’s an audience for these movies who walk in expecting that James Bond is going to save the day every time. Was that part of your calculation for what you wanted to do with this?

Craig: If you stay to the end credits, it definitely says, “James Bond will return.” So all is good.

Wilson: Bond does save the day. He does do that.

Broccoli: It’s the ultimate sacrifice. As Michael says, it’s very appropriate because people in this line of work put themselves at risk all the time. The amazing thing was that the audience managed to keep this secret, and that’s really a testament, I think, to the Bond fans, that they didn’t want to spoil other people’s enjoyment by telling them the end of the story.

Cary, when you came on board to direct the film, was the death already baked in?

Cary Joji Fukunaga: There was a few things that Barbara and Michael and Daniel had earmarked. This was definitely one of them. How he meets his end wasn’t decided yet. It was just the fact that he would, so the question then became how to do it.

What was the evolution there?

Fukunaga: There were many, many iterations.

Can you talk me through some of them?

Fukunaga: Blowing him up in a rocket.

Craig: Bad oyster!

Fukunaga: A bullet, like an anonymous bullet, I remember that one. But it just seemed like a conventional weapons death didn’t seem appropriate. Given how much he had been able to escape from everything else, the fact that it would just be a bullet that always had your name on it from the beginning, as a sort of the thematic element seemed, while realistic, for Bond it had to be something even beyond that — like the impossible, impossible situation.

Craig: I think the important thing was that we all try to create a situation of tragedy. The idea that there’s an insurmountable problem, there’s a greater force at play, and there’s nothing anybody can do about it. And the greater force being Savin’s weapon. And that it [kills] the only thing that Bond wants in life, is to be with the people he loves and that he can’t be with them, and therefore, there’s nothing worth living for. And he would in fact endanger their lives, and that’s the last thing on earth he wants to do. So that element was incredibly important to sort of thread in there, because it couldn’t feel like a random act. It had to have weight — without it, it wasn’t gonna work. And if we hadn’t have got that weight, I don’t think we would’ve done it. We would’ve found another way of ending it.

‘And Just Like That’ Recap: Miranda & Che Heat Up & Carrie Reaches Out To Samantha - Hollywood Life

Miranda and Che’s relationship took a dramatic (and very steamy) turn during the December 29 episode of ‘And Just Like That.’ Plus, Carrie admitted that she misses Samantha.

Carrie brings Seema to her beloved apartment, and we get a glimpse into the always hidden entryway. Carrie grabs an umbrella to use as a cane as she walks up the stairs because her lower back has been bothering her. Carrie thinks it’s a “completely common senior condition,” but Seema puts a quick call into her doctor cousin.

Carrie thinks she has arthritis, but Dr. Patel tells her that she actually has an undiagnosed congenital birth defect in her hip. Thankfully, this can be fixed surgically.

Rose Is Now Rock

Anthony has his first solo lunch post-Stanford with the girls. Carrie explains about the surgery, and Charlotte has a schedule that maps out who will take care of Carrie and when. At one point during lunch, Miranda wants to get champagne. Charlotte gives her a look and thinks it’s way too early for alcohol.

After an awkward moment with the school moms on Zoom, LTW tells Charlotte that Rose has told everyone at school to call them Rock from now on. Charlotte is blindsided. She goes to confront Rock about their new name. Rock says they did reveal their new name — on TikTok. Rock admits that they no longer feel like Rose. “I feel like Rock,” they say. The teachers and students have already adapted, and Charlotte and Harry have to quickly play catch-up.

Later, Harry and Charlotte have a parent-teacher conference about Rock. The teachers are very supportive of Rock’s decision and recommend therapy and counseling. Harry and Charlotte are having a hard time adjusting to Rock’s identity.

Miranda gets a book in the mail about how to quit drinking, and she automatically thinks Charlotte sent it to her. Miranda unloads on Carrie and thinks this was a passive way for Charlotte to talk to her. Miranda doesn’t think she needs to quit drinking.

Miranda & Che Have Sex

At the hospital, Che calls Carrie and Miranda picks up the phone. Carrie is busy trying to use the bathroom after her surgery. Miranda initially invites Che up but Carrie says no. Miranda ends up going down to have lunch with Che. Miranda is crushing hard.

Despite just having surgery, Carrie still Zooms into the podcast. She is high as a kite on painkillers and tells the story of when Samantha pulled out her diaphragm. Charlotte, Che, and Jackie can’t stop cracking up. After the podcast is over, Charlotte wonders if Samantha will be okay with Carrie mentioning her name and the story. Carrie doesn’t think this podcast is even on Samantha’s radar. “I think maybe you should let her know,” Charlotte says.

Che stops by Carrie’s apartment when Miranda is watching Carrie. While Carrie takes a nap, Che and Miranda end up taking shots and smoking a joint. Miranda gets very touchy-feely with Che. They end up passionately making out in the kitchen just as Carrie wakes up having to pee. Things escalate between Che and Miranda so much so that they don’t hear Carrie calling. Carrie pees in the empty Snapple bottle as Che and Miranda have sex in the kitchen. Carrie ends up spilling pee on the bed.

Sara Ramirez
Sara Ramirez and Cynthia Nixon as Che and Miranda. (HBO Max)

“That was the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life,” Miranda says to Che. They make out again before Che leaves. Che tells Miranda to DM them if she wants to hang out again soon.

Needless to say, Carrie is furious about what just happened. She doesn’t waste any time confronting Miranda about what she just heard. Miranda explains that she and Che had been drinking. She tries to laugh the whole thing off.  “Maybe Charlotte was right. Maybe you do have a drinking problem,” Carrie snaps.

Miranda says that she doesn’t have a drinking problem. She just got “carried away.” Carrie claps back, “You are married, and you just had sex in my kitchen.” Miranda then makes a confession. “I’m unhappy. I’m unhappy, okay? I’m trapped. I hate my marriage. I hate it. I hate my life. I hate it,” she tells Carrie.

“Since when?” Carrie asks. Miranda replies, “Forever?” Carrie doesn’t think that’s true, but Miranda says it feels like it is. Miranda feels like this life that she’s living “isn’t enough” for her. Carrie thinks that Miranda should look into her drinking problem. “I don’t have a problem,” Miranda says. If she really thought she had a problem, she’d quit instantly.

Carrie brings up Miranda having sex with Che in the kitchen. “I don’t know if I want to quit that. I’ve never felt like that in my life,” Miranda confesses.

Carrie Misses Samantha

Kim Cattrall

After Miranda leaves, Carrie texts Samantha to tell her about the diaphragm story coming up on the podcast. “One of my finest hours,” Samanta texts Carrie. “Hope that’s okay,” Carrie replies. Samantha says, “Of course. I love that your vagina is getting air time.” When Carrie texts “I miss you” to Samantha, that’s when Samantha goes radio-silent.

Back in Brooklyn, Miranda tries to teach herself how to make a negroni as she listens to Che’s podcast. She discovers that she’s the one who bought the drinking book and not Charlotte. That’s when Miranda decides to pour out all of the alcohol in the house.

Charlotte explains the whole situation with Rock at school to Carrie as they wait for physical therapy. While Harry thinks the school is overreacting, Charlotte wonders if they’re underreacting. Charlotte just wants to do the right thing for Rock, and Carrie knows she will. Carrie meets her physical therapist Travis, and he is beyond hot. Carrie’s even willing to pay out of pocket for him. She admits that her main goal is to get back into her heels. Just three months later, Carrie meets her goal.
