Britney Spears' lawyer says father needs to step down from conservatorship - Insider
- Jamie Spears agreed to step down as a Britney Spears conservator on August 12.
- In a court filing Tuesday, the pop star's lawyers demanded he step down immediately.
- The filing said Jamie Spears was trying to get a $2 million payout before stepping down.
Britney Spears' lawyers demanded her father Jamie Spears immediately step down from her conservatorship and said he was trying to "barter suspension and removal in exchange for approximately $2 million in payments."
"Regardless of the past, Mr. Spears and his counsel are now on notice: the status quo is no longer tolerable, and Britney Spears will not be extorted," a Tuesday court filing obtained by Deadline said.
In this latest filing to have Jamie Spears removed, lawyers said he is trying to leverage about $2 million before leaving his role as conservator.
"The only honorable, decent, and humane course of action is for Mr. Spears to resign now, provide all necessary information to evaluate his accounting, and, if matters cannot be resolved consensually, to try to defend his accounting," the filing said.
Spears' father agreed to step down from his role as a conservator on August 12 but said he'd like to work with the pop star's lawyers to find her a new conservator.
"A 'transition' can just as easily occur while Mr. Spears is suspended, as opposed to while he lingers as conservator waiting for his inevitable removal," the filing said. "The only difference is that the former is in his daughter's best interests, while the latter severely undermines those interests."
As a conservator, Jamie Spears had access to his daughter's finances and estate. The conservatorship was granted by the Los Angeles County Superior Court in 2008 but the pop star had asked the court to end it in June. In hearings, she called the agreement "cruelty."
"It's my wish and my dream for all of this to end," she said of the conservatorship on June 23. "I just want my life back. The conservatorship should end. I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive."
Lawyers for both Jamie and Britney Spears did not respond to Insider's request for comment.

Kourtney Kardashian's ex, Scott Disick, blasts her PDA with Travis Barker in alleged DMs to another past beau - Fox News
Scott Disick allegedly slid into the DMs of Kourtney Kardashian’s ex-boyfriend, Younes Bendjima, in an attempt to join forces against the reality star who has been jet-setting around the world with Travis Barker -- but Bendjima didn’t exactly go for the buddy routine.
Referencing the wildly public display of affection the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star, 42, and Blink-182 drummer, 45, have been exchanging during their recent vacation to Italy, Disick, 38, allegedly appeared to turn to Bendjima for support but the model, 28, didn’t take the bait and ended up putting Disick on blast afterward.
"Yo is this chick ok!???? Broooo like what is this. In the middle of Italy," Disick allegedly wrote to Bendjima, who shared the alleged direct message to his Instagram Stories on Monday. The message was sent alongside a photo of Kardashian – who is the mother of Disick’s three children – straddling Barker on a boat.
"Doesn’t matter to me as long as she’s happy," Bendjima appeared to write back, adding, "PS: i aint your bro."

Bendjima, who dated the Poosh founder from 2016 until their split in 2018, also wrote over the screenshot of the alleged direct message, stating: "keep the same energy you had about me publicly, privately."
In a follow-up slide on his Instagram Story, Bendjima wrote, "couldn’t miss this one. He been playing around for too long, tired [sic] to stay quiet and be the nice guy."
SCOTT DISICK AND AMELIA HAMLIN ENJOY FAMILY DATE NIGHT WITH HIS KIDS
Disick has yet to publicly respond to Bendjima, who many believed had also shaded his ex in a shared-then-deleted Instagram Story post back in April.
"Shamelessness has become so normal in today’s society that modesty has become strange," Bendjima posted at the time in the wake of Kardashian sharing a photo of herself donning a thong bikini and kissing Barker.
Barker shares daughter, Alabama, 15, and son, Landon, 17, with his ex-wife Shanna Moakler, 46. They split in 2008 after four years of marriage.
Meanwhile, Kardashian shares Mason, 11, Penelope, 9, and Reign, 6, with Disick, who is currently dating 20-year-old model Amelia Hamlin.
A rep for Disick did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment.

Mike Richards Out As EP On ‘Jeopardy!’ & ‘Wheel Of Fortune’ - Deadline
Mike Richards is out as executive producer of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.
Sony Pictures Television just told staff. See the full note below.
It comes after a turbulent few weeks for the long-running syndicated program, which saw Richards, who joined Jeopardy! as exec producer in 2020, ousted as host after one day of production.
Suzanne Prete, EVP, Business and Strategy, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, just sent an internal note to staff on these shows explaining that Richards would depart effective immediately with Embassy Row’s Michael Davies agreeing to help on an interim basis.
She said that they hoped that Richards exiting as host would have “minimized the disruption and internal difficulties” that they experienced over the last few weeks, but added that “clearly has not happened.”
Deadline understands that given all that has transpired over the last few weeks, it was clear that Richards’ position as EP has been too compromised for him to effectively continue in that role. It’s thought that given he doesn’t have the internal or external support that he needs to lead the team, his exit was in the best interests of the show.
Watch on Deadline
Richards stepped down as host earlier this month following a Ringer report about insensitive and sexist comments Richards had made towards his female co-hosts and guests on The Randumb Show, a podcast he hosted in 2013 and 2014, along with off-color remarks about Haitians and Jews.
Last week, the staff and crew of the venerable game show were summoned for a Microsoft Teams meeting this morning, sources told Deadline. Richards apologized to his staff for the comments and addressed his team during the meeting, which was attended by Sony’s top TV executive, Ravi Ahuja, Chairman of Sony Global Television Studios, who oversees the studio’s gameshow franchises and was in charge of the search for a permanent Jeopardy! host following the death of Alex Trebek. A similar virtual meeting was held with the staff of Sony’s Wheel of Fortune, which Richards also executive produces.
During this meeting, the studio confirmed that he would continue as executive producer. Yet, multiple Jeopardy! staffers who attended the meeting said that they had expected for him to step down as EP as the show is restarting the search for a permanent host.
Mayim Bialik, named earlier this month as host of the Jeopardy! primetime and spinoff series, will fill in as host of the mothership syndicated program for at least the next three weeks.
See the full note below:
Dear Team,
I’m writing to let you know that Mike will no longer be serving as EP of Wheel and Jeopardy! effective immediately. We had hoped that when Mike stepped down from the host position at Jeopardy! it would have minimized the disruption and internal difficulties we have all experienced these last few weeks. That clearly has not happened.
Michael Davies from Embassy Row has agreed to help with production on an interim basis until further notice. Michael and I will work together with all of you in the weeks ahead to ensure that production remains on schedule and we do not miss a beat as we head into the new season.
I know this has been a challenging time for the entire team, and I want to thank you all for your cooperation and professionalism over these last few weeks. As Ravi mentioned last week, I will be more involved in the day-to-day on our shows moving forward and I am looking forward to working closely with all of you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything.
Sincerely,
Suzanne

Hong Kong Legend Tony Leung Tries His Hand at Hollywood - GQ Magazine
Photography by Isaac Lam
When they first met to discuss casting what would become the latest Marvel movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, producer Jonathan Schwartz asked the ïŹlm’s director, Destin Daniel Cretton, who his dream choice was to play their villain. Wenwu, the estranged father of the ïŹlm’s hero, was many things—a stylish underworld boss, an ancient Chinese warrior, and a high-powered modern man—so Cretton needed someone with range. Immediately, he thought of one of his favorite actors. “Tony Leung,” he said, “but he’ll never do it.” Schwartz replied, “Let’s try.”
The preeminent Hong Kong actor of his generation and one of international cinema’s greatest stars, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, now 59, moves with the smoldering, understated charm of an old-world matinee idol. His performances often make his films feel like their own genre, whether they’re kung fu sagas, police dramas, or ïŹlm noir love stories. And over the past four decades, he’s been a muse to some of Asia’s greatest directors, among them Ang Lee, John Woo, Andy Lau, and his friend and frequent collaborator Wong Kar Wai. Wong’s films, in particular, set the tone for Leung’s career; the pencil mustache and debonair personality he cultivated for a role in the filmmaker’s surreal epic 2046 earned him a nickname that tried to translate his charm for Western audiences: Asia’s Clark Gable.
Leung had always wanted to make a Hollywood movie—he dreamed of working with Martin Scorsese, or starring in an adaptation of a Lawrence Block crime novel. But he’d never been presented with the right opportunity. American ïŹlm has traditionally had little to offer any Asian leading man, and Leung didn’t think there would ever be a role in a big-budget American movie for a Cantonese-speaking Hong Kong Chinese actor of his stature.
Cretton, the first Asian-American filmmaker to direct a Marvel movie, brought a different approach. “If we are going after an actor like that,” he says, “the character needs to be worthy of that ask. So using Tony as our guiding light, before he even said yes, lit a ïŹre under us to create a character that’s worthy of him entertaining the idea.”
How many superhero films cast their villains first? In doing so, Cretton hoped to solve a uniquely Asian-American problem with the source material. Marvel Comics had created the character Shang-Chi in the early ’70s as the son of a perhaps irredeemably stereotypical Asian villain: Fu Manchu. Half a century later, Marvel no longer had the rights to Fu Manchu and didn’t want them, either, meaning Cretton and his team needed an entirely new character.
Enter Wenwu, a father with an ancient criminal past now at the helm of a modern terrorist organization. As Leung recalls, when he first met with Cretton about the role, the director told him, “Although you’re not a superhero, your character has many layers.” Intrigued by the villain’s complexity and Cretton’s open, forthright style, Leung said yes, and then spent the two months before filming preparing for the part.
“Frankly, I couldn’t imagine someone in the real world with superpowers,” he says over Zoom one recent evening from his home in Hong Kong. “But I can imagine someone like him who is an underdog, who is a failure of a father.” At ease in a white T-shirt, a slender golden chain visible underneath, he has the ready and easy smile of a boy, a collection of elegant porcelain urns and vases arranged on a shelf behind him. He says he understood that Wenwu was ultimately driven not by evil but by a love for his children, which lent him a touch of humanity. “On the one hand,” Leung says, “he’s a bad father, but on the other, I just see him as someone who loves his family deeply.” And, he adds, “I don’t think he knows how to love himself.”
The story of Tony Leung’s life is very much like a Tony Leung movie. When he was seven years old, his father, the manager of a nightclub, left his mother for the third and final time. This was in late-’60s Hong Kong, a world where broken families were rare, and the abandonment made Leung into a private, reclusive person. “I didn’t know how to deal with people after my father left me,” he says. “When you’re a kid, everybody’s talking about their father, their family, how happy they are, how great their father is. I think from that time I stopped communicating with people. And I became very suppressed.”
That shame disappeared when he accompanied his mother to the movies, where the young Leung fell in love with the films of Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Gene Hackman. He grew particularly enamored of his mother’s favorite star, Alain Delon, a white-hot matinee idol from ’60s Paris with bold blue eyes that glowed like sapphires and a habit of smoking cigarettes with an almost erotic intimacy, as though they were keeping him alive.
But back then Leung never dreamed of becoming an actor. He was a 20-year-old appliance salesman when, in 1982, an acquaintance, the actor Stephen Chow, suggested he audition for Hong Kong’s famed Television Broadcasts Limited acting school. To his surprise, Leung was accepted, and for a year he trained six days a week in every discipline of acting, including kung fu, before being cast in his first television show. The work provided an outlet for a part of himself that he’d kept hidden, and he learned to direct his anger and fear into his characters. “I found a way to express myself,” he says, “to cry in front of others, to laugh, to let go of all my emotions without being shy.”
As a teenager, he would often talk to himself in front of a mirror but rarely to people, and he later channeled that method into his craft. In Wong Kar Wai’s 1994 ïŹlm, Chungking Express, he plays a lovelorn cop who spends three minutes talking to a bar of soap, a giant stuffed GarïŹeld the Cat, and a shirt he left on the floor. He talks to them like they’re friends he needs to cheer up, making jokes about their weight and cleanliness, and a few confessions of his own—a performance that left an indelible impression on Shang-Chi director Cretton.
Wong and Leung would go on to make a total of seven films together, including The Grandmaster, in which Leung stars as Bruce Lee’s legendary martial arts trainer, Ip Man, and 2046, a surreal picture with no script and a production that lasted for four years. But it was Wong’s 2000 ïŹlm, In the Mood for Love, that introduced Leung to a worldwide audience, and won him a best actor award at Cannes. Leung plays a writer whose wife travels a great deal, and who begins spending time with his neighbor, played by Maggie Cheung, whose husband also travels a great deal; as they put together that their spouses are having an affair, they also fall in love, to their mutual chagrin. The ïŹlm is a masterpiece of tone, as is Leung’s performance—his ability to sit in front of the camera alone and move from desolation to lust to tenderness to quiet fury, just with his eyes, in a single scene, is mesmerizing.
Leung took a rare turn as a villain in Ang Lee’s 2007 World War II–era drama, Lust, Caution, in which he played a Chinese government official in Japanese-occupied Shanghai who embarks on a wild affair with a would-be assassin. After seeing the ïŹlm, Leung found he’d surprised himself. He didn’t know where the character had come from. For him, the performance represented a kind of ideal—finding some part of himself he’d never found before, as if he were an explorer in an unknown world.
Leung is intensely private in ways that seem unusual in 2021. His wife, Carina Lau, is very active on social media, but he’s almost never visible there. Her Instagram post for his 58th birthday shows him skateboarding alone in an empty lot, which captures his essence perfectly. Partners since the late ’80s, they married in 2008, at a ceremony Wong Kar Wai organized for them in Bhutan. Over the course of their relationship, they’ve appeared in many films together, most recently in 2046, and Leung appreciates having a spouse who can act alongside him and who understands the intensity of his craft while also doing it herself.
Leung and Lau have, thus far, no children, and Leung has rarely played a father onscreen. “Someone actually approached me to play the role of a failed father,” Leung says, “but I rejected it because I don’t want to be reminded of how my dad treated me.”
He recounts happy memories of being alone in Tokyo or Hokkaido, checking into a hotel with a novel, riding a bicycle for hours, going alone to art galleries and museums, and dining by himself at izakayas afterward, drinking sake and eating internal organs—liver, intestine, and ox tongue, which he remembers as a favorite of his father’s. For exercise, he has a stuntman’s preference for extreme sports: skiing, snowboarding, surfing. But he’s quick to characterize these as hobbies he pursues for their solitary nature. “Maybe it’s because of my childhood background, which made me distance myself from people,” he says. “Since then, I’ve learned to find something that I really enjoy doing whilst I’m alone. Because you cannot always rely on being with people to feel happy, right?”
On Leung’s first day on the set of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, in Sydney, he emerged from his trailer, dressed and ready, and asked to have his chair put near the camera. Every day he repeated this process. “He would never be on his phone,” says Cretton. “He would just come and sit all day, watching everything that we’re doing—what shot we’re setting up, what we’re doing with the stand-ins. And by the time it was ready to go, I’d literally have nothing to tell him. Initially, I’d be like, ‘Okay, here’s what we’re thinking,’ and he’d say, ‘Oh,’ very politely, ‘yeah, I know. I’ve been watching this whole time.’ ”
When it came time for Leung to shoot a scene (which has since been cut), Cretton says a reverent quiet descended across the set. It was a hot day, and for Leung it was even hotter; he was attired in the long robes and wig required to play Wenwu as a young thief, stealing cattle, in what becomes a massive battle scene. Immediately after the first cut, Cretton looked to Schwartz, the producer, and said, “I don’t even know what to go tell him, because we don’t have to do another take. There’s really no reason to.”
Simu Liu, the 32-year-old Chinese-Canadian actor who plays Shang-Chi, is irrepressible when speaking of Leung’s stature, likening him to “Leonardo DiCaprio, Marlon Brando, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, all rolled up into one.” Sometimes he could hardly believe they were acting in the same ïŹlm. “One day you’re on a network comedy show that’s doing really well, and then another day you’re in Australia with one of your childhood heroes, Tony Leung, somebody you grew up watching and idolizing.”
What struck Liu most was Leung’s unassuming manner. “If you met him and you didn’t know him, which of course is very difficult if you live in Asia, you’d think he was just like anybody on the street. He was so kind and radiated this Asian dad energy that I’m very familiar with and very drawn to.”
Yet sharing scenes with Leung, Liu soon found himself in a confrontation he hadn’t quite imagined, with those incredible eyes he’d grown up watching. “He’s able to convey so much with a single look,” Liu says. “It’s one thing to see that captured onscreen; it’s another to have those eyes across from you, piercing through to the depths of your soul.”
In between takes, Liu would listen as Leung shared stories of his formative TVB days, pointing out the differences between the elaborate pains with stunt safety Marvel took with harnesses and special effects and his old days in Hong Kong action films, doing stunts on wires so thin they seemed they might snap.
Leung is both moved and amused by what his arrival in Hollywood already means to his fans back home in Hong Kong. “Since my career began in TV shows in the ’80s,” he says, “a lot of my fans are moms and dads or grandmas, grandpas, and a lot of those people treat me as their own son. It’s like, ‘Oh, you went to study overseas and to a very famous college. Good for you. I’m really happy for you. I’m proud of you.’ ”
Leung, for his part, finds himself gravitating toward playing more villains. I ask if it is possibly the beginning of a new period for him, and he simply says, “Yes.” After a long career, it’s an unexplored terrain, full of challenges that can still scare him. “They usually have a more complex character and motivations,” he says. “It’s hard to experience one in real life, because usually there are consequences. But in movies, you get to explore the story without consequences.”

Candyman: Horror reboot director Nia DaCosta makes US box office history - BBC News
Candyman director Nia DaCosta has made history by becoming the first black woman to have a film open at number one on the North American box office chart.
The director's reimagining of the 1992 horror made $22m (£16m) in its first weekend in US and Canadian cinemas.
That is almost as much as the film - co-written and produced by Get Out's Jordan Peele - actually cost to make.
Based on a Clive Barker story, the film is named after a hook-handed killer who has spawned a fearsome urban legend.
The new film stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a visual artist who comes to regret basing an exhibit on the Candyman myth.
DaCosta only had one feature credit, 2018's Little Woods, when she was invited to direct the latest instalment in the horror franchise.
The 31-year-old is currently working on The Marvels, the sequel to the 2019 Marvel comic book blockbuster Captain Marvel.
Candyman is the latest horror release to perform strongly in US cinemas as the sector recovers from the impact of the Covid pandemic.
A Quiet Place Part II was another scary success story, having made more than half of its $296m (£215m) worldwide haul from North American audiences.
Box office analysts said Candyman surpassed their expectations for an R-rated film opening in the Covid-19 era.
It performed better than had been expected even with Hurricane Ida depressing attendance in some southern US states.
Candyman also bucked a recent trend by launching only in cinemas, without a simultaneous release on streaming sites.
Films that have adopted a dual-release strategy, such as Black Widow and The Suicide Squad, have seen takings decline steeply in their second weekend in cinemas.
Candyman's success came at the expense of action comedy Free Guy, which slipped to second place with weekend takings of $13.6m (£9.8m).
Canine cartoon Paw Patrol: The Movie also dropped down a place, making $6.6m(£4.8m) in its second weekend in North American picture houses.

Younes Bendjima shares alleged DMs from Scott Disick about Kourtney's PDA - Page Six
Apparently Scott Disick thinks Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker’s PDA is a bit much.
In a plan that truly backfired, Disick appeared to direct message Kardashian’s other ex-boyfriend Younes Bendjima on Instagram looking for support in his horror over her paparazzi-snapped makeout sessions with Travis Barker.
Unfortunately, not only did the model, 28, not give Disick, 38, what he was looking for, he also put him on blast by sharing screenshots of the exchange on his Instagram Story.
“Yo is this chick ok!???? Broooo like what is this. In the middle of Italy,” Disick appeared to write to Bendjima, attaching a photo of Kardashian, 42, mounting the Blink-182 rocker, 45, on a boat.
“Doesn’t matter to me as long as she’s happy,” Bendjima seemed to respond. “PS: i aint your bro.”
Bendjima added over the photo, “keep the same energy you had about me publicly, privately.”
In a follow-up slide on his Instagram Story, Bendjima wrote, “couldn’t miss this one. He been playing around for too long, tired [sic] to stay quiet and be the nice guy.”
Disick hasn’t publicly responded to Bendjima putting him on blast.
Perhaps the Talentless founder thought he had an ally in Bendjima because the Algerian model appeared to shade the former “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star’s PDA with Barker in April.
“Shamelessness has become so normal in today’s society that modesty has become strange,” Bendjima posted — and deleted — on his Instagram Story shortly after his ex-girlfriend shared a photo of herself wearing a thong bikini and kissing the famed drummer.
Kardashian and Bendjima dated from around 2016 to 2018, when they split following a lengthy vacation in Italy. They sparked romance rumors again in December 2019 when they were spotted at Disneyland together.
During their on-again, off-again courtship, Bendjima, who is Muslim, called out his then-girlfriend for her sexy photos.
“[That’s] what you need to show to get likes?” he commented on a bikini snapshot, then deleted it.

Former child star Matthew Mindler died by suicide: coroner - Page Six
Former child star Matthew Mindler’s death has been ruled a suicide.
The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office made the “manner of death” ruling Monday, though the exact cause of Mindler’s death is still pending the toxicology screen, TMZ reports.
Mindler, 19, was found dead on Aug. 28, just three days after the college freshman was reported missing. His college, Millersville University, announced the news to the student body Saturday.
“It is with a grieving heart that I let you know of the death of 19-year-old Matthew Mindler from Hellertown, Pennsylvania, a first-year student at Millersville University. A search had been underway for Matthew since Thursday, after he was reported missing,” the announcement read.
“Matthew was found deceased this morning, Saturday, August 28, in Manor Township near campus. Matthew was transported to the Lancaster County Forensic Center by the coroner for further investigation.”
Mindler’s family said he “did not return to his room or return phone calls from his family” Wednesday and he was consequently reported missing. His last sighting was when he left his dorm room building in the evening on Tuesday, Aug. 24. Wednesday morning, he did not show up for his classes.
Per IMDB, Mindler’s first onscreen role was in a 2009 episode of “As the World Turns.” Two years later, he was featured in “Our Idiot Brother” alongside a host of A-listers, including Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Rashida Jones and Zooey Deschanel.
He notched appearances in a live stage performance of “This American Life” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2014 and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” in 2015. His last credited role, in 2016, was in the made-for-TV movie “Chad: An American Boy,” alongside Nasim Pedrad.

Kanye West’s ‘Donda’ Beats Olivia Rodrigo for 2021’s Most-Streamed Album in 24 Hours on Spotify - Variety
UPDATE: Spotify has corrected a statement it sent to Variety earlier on Monday that inaccurately stated that West also topped Rodrigo’s record as 2021’s most-streamed artist in 24 hours; West’s record is only for 2021’s most-streamed album in 24 hours.
After several weeks of one of the most highly publicized and confusing album rollouts in history, Kanye West’s “Donda” finally was officially released to streaming services at the unusual, if not completely unprecedented, time of early Sunday morning. While it’s unclear exactly when the album was posted, a press release from Def Jam, West’s label, announcing it arrived at around 8:15 a.m. ET.
Around 32 hours later, the numbers are still rolling in, but one thing that can be confirmed is that “On Sunday, August 29, Kanye West’s ‘Donda’ broke the record for the most-streamed album in a day so far in 2021,” topping Olivia Rodrigo and her debut album “Sour,” according to a rep for the streaming giant, the world’s largest paid music subscription service.
“Donda” seems likely to break even more records as the week goes on — at least until Drake’s hotly anticipated “Certified Lover Boy” album finally drops on Friday. At the time of this article’s publication, songs from “Donda” occupied six of the top 10 spots on Spotify’s Top 200, with another six between 11 and 20, and another six between 21 and 30, and another five between 31 and 50. That’s 23 of the album’s 27 songs taking up more than half of the Top 50.
While no official certifications have been announced at the time of this article’s publication, at Apple Music it’s even bigger, with songs from the album occupying the top 18 spots in its U.S. Top 100, with another seven further down in the top 50.
Variety will have more on this fast-moving situation as it develops.

'Candyman' director Nia DaCosta makes box office history - New York Post
“Candyman” director Nia DaCosta made history this weekend when her film took the No. 1 spot at the box office, grossing $22.3 million in its opening weekend.
The horror flick is a big milestone, both for the 31-year-old filmmaker and the industry: She’s the first black female director to top the box-office chart.
“Candyman” is a remake of the 1992 horror classic of the same name. Co-written by DaCosta, Oscar winner Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld, the plot follows Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as an artist who moves into the first film’s gentrified Cabrini-Green neighborhood with his girlfriend. The slasher movie also stars Teyonah Parris, Colman Domingo, Vanessa Williams, Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen.
The movie beat expectations, according to Variety, since it was projected to earn $15 million in ticket sales.
The blowout weekend for “Candyman” also marks the second-highest opening-weekend gross for a film directed by a black woman. Ava DuVernay holds that top spot, with 2018’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” which grossed $33 million in its opening weekend. It was also the first film directed by a black woman to pass $100 million at the box office.
While DaCosta’s achievement is a righteous one, black women are still underrepresented in the world of directing. But she’s is on a mission to change all of that.
The Brooklyn native will make history yet again as the first black woman and the youngest person to direct a Marvel film with “The Marvels” — the sequel to 2019’s “Captain Marvel.” The superhero flick is currently in production and will hit theaters in 2022.

R. Kelly’s First Male Accuser Alleges Singer Sexually Abused Him as Teen - Rolling Stone
The first man to publicly accuse R. Kelly of sexual abuse testified at the singer’s trial in Brooklyn on Monday, Vulture reports.
The man was identified as Louis and claimed that Kelly abused him when he was 17 years old. It was also later revealed that Louis had been arrested for offering money to a potential witness against Kelly, and was testifying as part of a plea agreement with the government.
Louis said he met Kelly in 2006, when the singer came to a McDonald’s where Louis was working. Kelly asked Louis to give his phone number to a female colleague, while Kelly also gave Louis his phone number as well.
Louis said he aspired to be a musician, and he attended several parties at R. Kelly’s home in Olympia Fields, Illinois. The first time, he went to Kelly’s home with his parents, but during later visits he went alone. He periodically worked on music in Kelly’s studio, though nothing materialized.

During a later visit to Kelly’s residence, Louis claimed that Kelly brought him to a detached garage that was set up like a boxing ring, where the two of them spoke about Louis’ aspirations. Kelly allegedly asked Louis what he was “willing to do for the music,” and Louis said he offered to do “crazy” tasks like carrying Kelly’s bags. Eventually, Louis claimed, Kelly asked him if he had any fantasies.
“I said, I got fantasies,” Louis testified. “I told him I had fantasies of two or three girls at one time. He said, ‘You ever had a fantasy about a man?’ I said no. He crawled down on his knees and proceeded to give me oral sex.”
Louis claimed he told Kelly he “didn’t like it” and “wasn’t into it,” and Kelly stopped. “He just told me, ‘Keep it between me and him. We’re family now. We’re brothers,’ ” Louis said.
Louis continued to attend Kelly’s parties, and claimed that Kelly would record their sexual encounters. He also accused Kelly of making him engage in a sexual encounter with a stranger while Kelly watched. It’s unclear when Kelly and Louis allegedly stopped engaging in sexual activities with each other, though they were in contact until at least 2018.
Later in his testimony, Louis explained that he had been arrested for trying to bribe a potential witness against R. Kelly. Louis said he didn’t know the potential witness was already cooperating with the government and was recording their conversation at the time. Louis said Kelly was not involved with the bribery scheme, but said he offered the witness money so they would “not cooperate with the government.”
Louis later pleaded guilty to attempted bribery and said if he follows the rules of the agreement, the government will write a letter requesting a more lenient sentence to the judge overseeing his case. Louis said he did not want to testify because “it will affect my reputation” in the music industry, where he still hoped to succeed. When asked what Kelly did to help his career, though, Louis replied: “Nothing.”
