Gloria Estefan reveals she was sexually abused when she was 9 - NBC News

NEW YORK — Gloria Estefan has revealed that, at the age of 9, she was sexually abused by someone her mother trusted.

The Cuban-American superstar spoke for the first time publicly about the abuse and its effects on her during an episode of the Facebook Watch show “Red Table Talk: The Estefans” that aired Thursday.

“He was family, but not close family. He was in a position of power because my mother had put me in his music school and he immediately started telling her how talented I was and how I needed special attention, and she felt lucky that he was focusing this kind of attention on me,” the singer said.

Estefan, who was born in Cuba and moved to Miami with her family when she was a toddler, revealed the abuse at the top of the show, which featured Clare Crawley, the first Latina “Bachelorette.” On the episode, called “Betrayed by Trusted Adults,” Crawley talked about child abuse she experienced at the hands of a priest.

The Associated Press does not typically identify victims of sexual abuse unless they agree to be named or share their stories publicly.

Sitting at the round red table with her co-hosts — daughter Emily Estefan and niece Lili Estefan — Estefan opened by saying that “93 percent of abused children know and trust their abusers, and I know this, because I was one of them.”

“You’ve waited for this moment a long time,” her niece told her.

“I have,” Estefan replied.

The three held hands with teary eyes.

She did not name her abuser but described how she tried to stop him. She said the abuse started little by little before moving fast, and that she knew that she was in a dangerous situation after confronting him.

“I told him, ‘This cannot happen, you cannot do this.’ He goes: ‘Your father’s in Vietnam, your mother’s alone and I will kill her if you tell her,’” Estefan said. “And I knew it was crazy, because at no point did I ever think that it was because of me that this was happening. I knew the man was insane and that’s why I thought he might actually hurt my mother.”

Estefan said she started making up excuses to avoid going to music lessons. Her daughter Emily asked if her grandmother had any inkling something was going on. People didn’t talk about those things back then, Estefan replied.

She tried to reach her dad, with whom she exchanged voice tapes while he was posted in Vietnam.

Recordings in Spanish from when Estefan was 9 were played at the show with English subtitles:

Gloria: “I’m taking guitar lessons. I like them but the exercises are a little hard.”

Her dad: “Mommy told me that the owner of the academy where you’re taking your guitar lessons is very proud of you.”

Gloria: “I like the notes, but it’s a little boring to study the notes”.

Her dad: “Mommy tells me that he said that you are a born artist.”

Estefan said the level of anxiety made her lose a “circle of hair.”

“I couldn’t take it anymore,” she said, so one night she ran to her mother’s bedroom at 3 a.m. and told her what was going on.

Her mother called the police, but the officers advised her not to press charges because the trauma of testifying would be too harmful.

Both Crawley and Estefan said during the show that they didn’t like to be called victims. Crawley called herself a survivor.

Estefan said she didn’t tell the producers she was going to reveal her story on Thursday’s episode. No one knew about the abuse except for her family, said the singer, who has been married to music producer Emilio Estefan for over four decades.

She also said that, when her mother started inquiring about this man within the family, an aunt shared that he had abused her years back in Cuba.

The Associated Press asked the show’s publicist if Estefan could answer some questions, including if the man was still alive. The publicist told the AP that she would not make further comments.

On “Red Table Talk,” Estefan recalled almost going public in the mid-80s, when her hit “Conga” with the Miami Sound Machine was at the top of the Billboard charts and “this predator, who was a respected member of the community,” had the audacity to write a letter to a paper criticizing her music.

“At that moment, I was so angry that I was about to blow the lid off of everything,” she said. “And then I thought: ’My whole success is gonna turn into him!

“It’s manipulation and control, but that’s what they do, they take your power,” she added, also admitting the fear that there could be other victims makes her feel bad.

After introducing Crawley and telling her that she didn’t want to sit quietly while she shared her story, Estefan said she had been waiting for the right opportunity and space to tell hers.

The show was that space.

“This is one of the reasons why I said yes to the ‘(Red) Table (Talk)’ at all, because we wanted to create this space where we talk about important things that hopefully will make a difference to everybody that’s watching out there.”

Scarlett Johansson, Disney Settle Explosive ‘Black Widow’ Lawsuit - Hollywood Reporter

Scarlett Johansson and Disney have settled a breach of contract lawsuit over the star’s Black Widow payday, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“I am happy to have resolved our differences with Disney,” stated Johansson. “I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done together over the years and have greatly enjoyed my creative relationship with the team. I look forward to continuing our collaboration in years to come.”

Disney Studios chairman Alan Bergman added: “I’m very pleased that we have been able to come to a mutual agreement with Scarlett Johansson regarding Black Widow. We appreciate her contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and look forward to working together on a number of upcoming projects, including Disney’s Tower of Terror.”

Related Stories

The explosive suit, filed by the actress in July in Los Angeles Superior Court, claimed that the studio sacrificed the film’s box office potential in order to grow its fledgling Disney+ streaming service. Disney countered that Johansson was paid $20 million for the film.

The settlement brings to a close a back-and-forth PR battle that pitted the CAA-repped star against Disney and was poised to have dramatic implications for all of Hollywood’s major studios. Johansson’s cause received support in the industry, with talent and executives — including Jamie Lee Curtis, Marvel’s WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen and mogul Jason Blum — speaking out on her behalf.

At the time of the complaint, a Disney spokesperson said, in part, “The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.” CAA co-chairman Bryan Lourd shot back that Disney “shamelessly and falsely accused Ms. Johansson of being insensitive to the global COVID pandemic, in an attempt to make her appear to be someone they and I know she isn’t.”

In her complaint, Johansson said the Marvel tentpole had been guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release when she signed her deal. She alleged that her contract was breached when the film was simultaneously released on Disney+.

As the coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc on Hollywood over the past 18 months, Black Widow was one of many big-budget movies, also including Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman 1984 and Disney’s Cruella and Jungle Cruise, that bowed simultaneously on streaming and in theaters. But to date, Johansson is the only major movie star to sue.

“Why would Disney forgo hundreds of millions of dollars in box office receipts by releasing the Picture in theatres at a time when it knew the theatrical market was ‘weak,’ rather than waiting a few months for that market to recover?” the complaint asked. “On information and belief, the decision to do so was made at least in part because Disney saw the opportunity to promote its flagship subscription service using the Picture and Ms. Johansson, thereby attracting new paying monthly subscribers, retaining existing ones, and establishing Disney+ as a must-have service in an increasingly competitive marketplace.”

Black Widow, which has earned $379 million at the worldwide box office to date, debuted at the same time in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access for an additional $30. But in what was viewed by rival studio executives as a major miscalculation, Disney boasted on July 11 that Black Widow earned $60 million via Disney+ Premier Access, opening the door for a fierce clash. After all, Johansson had been considering litigation for several months, says a source familiar with the suit. Until the afternoon of July 28, she believed Disney would make an offer and that she wouldn’t have to file a suit. But Disney stayed in the mode of, “Let’s keep talking,” the source adds. Johansson was particularly incensed by the announcement, which pleased Wall Street but not the talent and representation community.

According to the complaint, Disney’s move “not only increased the value of Disney+, but it also intentionally saved Marvel (and thereby itself) what Marvel itself referred to as ‘very large box office bonuses’ that Marvel otherwise would have been obligated to pay Ms. Johansson.”

Johansson vs. Disney marked the latest iteration of a profit-participation dispute that is all too common in Hollywood, with actors fighting studios over their backend compensation or the definition of “net profit.” Very few of these battles percolate to the surface; they often come to a resolution before lawyers get involved, or the actor’s contract contains an arbitration provision and the whole process remains confidential. (A source familiar with Johansson’s suit says her contract does have an arbitration provision, but her lawyers were willing to test it.)

“The exception is when there’s so much money involved or if there’s a level of acrimony that has reached a point of no return, and people are going to stand on principle,” attorney James Sammataro tells THR. “That statement by Disney confirmed the latter, but it still is a shocking statement to make — to paint someone as being insensitive and playing the whole, ‘You’re so out of touch’ card. You could probably make the same argument about Disney; ‘Yeah. You’ve been generating millions, if not billions, during the pandemic.’”

In the wake of Johansson’s suit, more than a handful of other A-listers were said to be considering filing similar suits. (Jungle Cruise star Dwayne Johnson was not one of them, given that he has a different compensation structure than Johansson.) But that has not come to fruition yet. Cruella’s Emma Stone closed a deal two weeks after Johansson’s suit to star in a sequel of Disney’s live-action film, offering a sign that Disney was working to secure and mollify talent amid the charged atmosphere.

While Disney has faced criticism for its handling of talent deals during the pandemic, WarnerMedia took a different approach by proactively doling out as much as $200 million to pay a long list of stars whose Warner Bros. films were simultaneously opening in theaters and on its HBO Max streaming service, including Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot and Will Smith.

Johansson is represented by Kasowitz partner John Berlinski, while Daniel Petrocelli has been repping Disney.

Super Bowl halftime show to feature Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar - ESPN

LOS ANGELES -- Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar will perform for the first time onstage together at the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show.

The NFL, Pepsi and Roc Nation announced Thursday that the five music icons will perform on Feb. 13 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Lamar are Southern California natives.

Dre emerged from the West Coast gangster rap scene alongside Eazy-E and Ice Cube to help form the group N.W.A., which made a major mark in the hip-hop culture and music industry with controversial lyrics in the late 1980s. Dre is responsible for bringing forth rap stars such as Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent and Lamar. Dre also produced Blige's No. 1 hit song "Family Affair."

"The opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime show, and to do it in my own backyard, will be one of the biggest thrills of my career," Dre said in a statement. The seven-time Grammy winner added that their halftime performance will be an "unforgettable cultural moment."

The Super Bowl returns to the Los Angeles area for the first time since 1993. It's the third year of collaboration between the NFL, Pepsi and Roc Nation.

Roc Nation and Emmy-nominated producer Jesse Collins will serve as co-producers of the halftime show. The game and halftime show will air live on NBC.

The five music artists have a combined 44 Grammys. Eminem has the most with 15.

Roc Nation founder Jay-Z said in a statement that their show will be "history in the making."

Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Blige and Lamar join a list of celebrated musicians who have played during Super Bowl halftime shows, including Beyonce, Madonna, Coldplay, Katy Perry, U2, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and most recently The Weeknd.

NFL and Pepsi will join together to support the launch of Regional School #1, a magnet high school in South Los Angeles. It's set to open for students next fall as part of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The high school is based on the USC Iovine and Young Academy, a program founded by Jimmy Iovine and Andre "Dr. Dre" Young. It will offer an educational model focused on the theme of integrated design, technology and entrepreneurship.

"This effort will help develop and inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators," said Megan K. Reilly, the L.A. Unified interim superintendent. "We are excited about the additional opportunities this partnership will bring to our students."

Ellen Pompeo Says She Cussed Out Denzel Washington On 'Grey's Anatomy' Set - HuffPost

Ellen Pompeo said she harshly snapped back at Denzel Washington when he directed an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Washington, a two-time Oscar-winning actor, was helming 2016′s “The Sound of Silence” episode when Pompeo said she ad-libbed the line, “Look at me when you apologize. Look at me,” in an exchange with another actor. The off-script moment irritated Washington.

“Denzel went ham on my ass,” she told former co-star Patrick Dempsey on her “Tell Me” podcast, posted Wednesday. “He was like, ‘I’m the director. Don’t you tell him what to do.’ And I was like, ’Listen, motherfucker, this is my show. This is my set. Who are you telling? Like you barely know where the bathroom is.’”

The two didn’t speak for a while. Pompeo said she told Washington’s wife, Pauletta Pearson, that Washington yelled at her and “I’m not OK with him.”

But the two eventually patched things up, and Pompeo said she has the “utmost respect” for Washington. The passion of performers, she added, creates the “magic.”

“That’s where you get the good stuff,” she said.

Another juicy bit of behind-the-scenes “G.A.” intrigue emerged recently. A producer said in a tell-all book about the series that Dempsey gave castmates “PTSD” and was “terrorizing the set” during his acrimonious departure from the show in 2015.

Big Brother Spoilers: Finalists fear the jury - globaltv - Global

John Powell – GlobalTV.com

Just before the Big Brother live feeds shut down for the season today the finalists not only expressed their appreciation to the “live feeders” but also aired their concerns about the jury they face tonight.

As Xavier was making breakfast in the kitchen he chatted with Derek who was relaxing on the couch in the front room.

“I prayed last night for everyone who was involved in this competition to get home safely,” said Derek.

“That’s really good. That’s a quality prayer,” said Xavier.

Derek promised Xavier he wasn’t going to fret anymore about the outcome of the final HoH competition of the season tonight between Xavier and Azah.

“At this point, it is just a waiting game until the competition,” said Xavier.

“It is what it is at this point. I don’t have any control over it. If you win, I will cry. If you lose, I will cry,” Derek said to Xavier.

“Today is the day that we find out how salty everyone is with us. They might be really salty,” said Xavier about the jury.

“For me, if they are going to sit there all holier than thou because that they got played or got lied to…Which one of you did not lie, deceive or manipulate somebody this season?” he continued.

“Everybody did,” replied Derek.

Xavier went over to the memory wall and started pointing at the various jury members one at a time.

“Britini, you pinkie promised several people that you had 75 BB Bucks. DX, you promised me you weren’t going to touch Christian,” said Xavier.

“DX also said he didn’t have 100 BB bucks,” added Derek.

“Sara Beth, you said you weren’t going after Alyssa. Claire, you said you didn’t get 100 BB Bucks,” said Xavier.

“She was also in an alliance called The King Slayers. She was also the Secret HoH,” added Derek.

When it came to Tiffany, Xavier summed her up very succinctly.

“We would be here all day,” he laughed.

“Hannah, you said DX was your number one person but he wasn’t,” said Xavier continuing to go through the jury members.

“Kyland, you said you weren’t going after Xavier but you were,” began Derek.

“Kyland, too many to even count,” Xavier laughed.

Once Xavier had finished his breakfast he and Derek moved to the kitchen table to play cards. Azah joined them and addressed the live feeders one final time.

“This was a crazy, once-in-a-lifetime experience that I never thought I would experience but I am here. Not only am I here I am with two people who matter so much to me. I made it to the end of the game. I hope you guys liked us, if you don’t I guess it doesn’t matter. I am happy we had an alliance centred around a mission and completely accomplished it,” she said smiling.

“It is weird not having you guys around because I felt like I could talk to you guys sometimes. You guys saw me in really intimate moments. You saw me cry all the time. You probably heard me fart as well,” she laughed.

The feeds turned off for the season minutes later.

Tune into the finale of Big Brother USA tonight at 9 p.m. ET on Global Television following Survivor.

Surprise! Eminem serves fans at food window of Mom’s Spaghetti restaurant Detroit opening - MLive.com

DETROIT - Talk about a first trip to Detroit he’ll never forget. An Eminem fan from New York came to the Motor City for the rapper’s Mom’s Spaghetti restaurant opening only to be one of the few to actually meet the real “Slim Shady.”

Brendan Linden, who is from the Bronx, was one of the first people in the line which stretched for blocks along Woodward Avenue. Much to his surprise, Eminem showed up before the doors opened and handed spaghetti to the first 10 people.

“I came here in the hopes of meeting him. I didn’t think he was going to be here,” an excited Linden told MLive. “He shook my hand and I told him what he means to my life and how much his music has impacted me. He told me thank you so much and he gave me some food.”

The walk-up window opened on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 5:00 p.m. It’s located inside the newly-opened Union Assembly restaurant at 2131 Woodward Ave., which is between The Fox Theatre and The Fillmore.

Linden wasn’t the only one still in shock when we got there before the eatery opened. Joel and Erin Farrer of Allen Park and Detroit also met the rapper and say it was one of the coolest moments of their lives.

“They told us they wanted 10 people. So we went around the corner and Eminem was giving out spaghetti,” Erin Farrer said with a huge smile on her face. “When I went up there, I was crying and he said, ‘It’s OK, it’s just spaghetti.’ I told him I had waited my whole life to meet you and he gave me a hug and signed my spaghetti container.”

“Seeing her get all emotional made me want to cry for her,” Joel Farrer added. “I had him sign my bag and told him, ‘Thank you, that’s my cousin and all she ever wanted to do was meet you.’ It was a 10 or 15 second conversation, but it was great.”

Mom’s Spaghetti is a walk-up restaurant serving three things: Mom’s Spaghetti ($9), Mom’s Spaghetti with meatballs ($12) and a S’ghetti Sandwich ($11) along with water and pop. For a small additional charge, you can also get vegan meatballs.

The adjacent upstairs store, “The Trailer,” sells Mom’s Spaghetti merch, items from the Eminem retail collection (including limited editions and coveted dead stock) and memorabilia from the Eminem archives. We’re told you can also expect drops and rotating stock at “The Trailer,” which is limited to eight “Stans” at a time.

Union Assembly is open Wednesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. to midnight (the kitchen is open until 10 p.m.), Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. - 2 a.m. (kitchen until 11 p.m.) and Sunday from 3 p.m. to midnight (kitchen till 9 p.m.). It’s closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Serkis Talks Eddie & "Venom" Love Affair - Dark Horizons

Serkis Talks Eddie Venom Love Affair
Sony Pictures

Though the first “Venom” was critically derided, there was praise kept not just for Tom Hardy’s performance but the moments the film embraced the wackier buddy comedy and even romantic comedy aspects of its setup.

From the lobster tank restaurant scene to the arguments between Hardy and Venom, the film worked best when it left behind the more conventional superhero genre aspects and went for old school Cronenberg-style body horror (albeit in a PG-13 context) meets Stooges-esque physical comedy.

With the sequel, inevitable after the first grossed $856 million worldwide, both director Andy Serkis and the Sony marketing department seem to be embracing the odd couple pairing.

Speaking with Uproxx recently, Serkis talked about how this unusual relationship had evolved into something co-dependent and even intimate:

“Absolutely they do love each other and that’s the kind of the center of the movie is that love affair, that central love affair… I inherited it [the film] at a really interesting moment – which is this The Seven Year Itch, The Odd Couple phase of Eddie and Venom’s relationship.”

Serkis took it further, saying how one key sequence in the film, where Venom goes to a rave, leans into queer elements of the character:

“Tom and [co-writer] Kelly [Marcel] were always about Venom coming out and going to a party that was a very sort of an LGBTQIA kind of festival, really, I’d call it, and so this is his coming out party basically. This is Venom’s coming-out party.”

A new featurette for the film also goes further into the pair’s relationship and how it evolves becomes more of the central focus this time out. “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” is set to hit cinemas on October 1st.

Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga Will Star in 'Macbeth' on Broadway - The New York Times

Ruth Negga will co-star as Lady Macbeth in a production directed by Sam Gold and scheduled to open next April.

Daniel Craig is veering from James Bond to Shakespeare.

The 53-year-old actor, who has said that his tenure as Bond will come to an end with the release of “No Time to Die,” on Oct. 8, plans to return to Broadway next spring to star in the title role of “Macbeth.”

Famous for his film career, especially as the rakish spy, Craig is also an accomplished stage actor.

He has starred in two previous Broadway plays, the 2009 production of “A Steady Rain” and a 2013 revival of “Betrayal.” And he played the villainous Iago in a 2016 Off Broadway production of Shakespeare’s “Othello” at New York Theater Workshop, opposite David Oyelowo in the title role. (“Gritty brilliance,” the New York Times critic Ben Brantley wrote of Craig’s performance.)

In the “Macbeth” production, Ruth Negga will play his wife, Lady Macbeth. Negga, known for the TV show “Preacher” and the film “Loving,” last year played the title role in “Hamlet” (yes, a woman played Hamlet; Negga had also previously played Ophelia) in an Off Broadway production at St. Ann’s Warehouse.

Nina Prommer/EPA, via Shutterstock

The lead producer for the Broadway production will be Barbara Broccoli, who has a long collaboration with Craig: She and her brother produce the Bond films, and they also co-produced “A Steady Rain” and supported the nonprofit “Othello” production.

Broccoli said she had been talking with Craig about Macbeth for several years, ever since he expressed an interest in playing the role.

“I’m thrilled that it’s coming after Bond, because, obviously, after 16 years of working with this man, the thought of it all coming to an end has been really difficult to take,” she said. “And so it’s really heartwarming for me that we’re going to be working on something else so soon after the wrapping up of his James Bond cycle.”

Broccoli said that she and Craig also thought it was important to stage the play this season, as Broadway seeks to recover after a long shutdown prompted by the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s been a horrendous 18 months for everyone, and live theater has been damaged tremendously,” she said. “He really wants to come back and be on the stage and encourage people to come back to Broadway — it’s important to all of us from a cultural point of view and from a social point of view.”

“Macbeth” is scheduled to run for 15 weeks, beginning previews March 29 and opening April 28 at Broadway’s Lyceum Theater. The production is to be directed by Sam Gold, who also directed the Off Broadway “Othello” in which Craig appeared, and who in 2019 directed a Broadway revival of “King Lear.” The production will feature original music by Gaelynn Lea.

There have been 47 previous Broadway productions of “Macbeth,” according to the Internet Broadway Database; the most recent was in 2013, starring Ethan Hawke and Anne-Marie Duff.

Broccoli is also the lead producer of “Sing Street,” a musical that was scheduled to begin performances on Broadway in March 2020, but never did because of the pandemic. She said she still plans to bring the show to Broadway, but was not ready to say when. “We love the show,” she said, “and we’re trying to figure out the best way to bring it back.”

Piers Morgan ridicules Daniel Craig's 'No Time to Die' premiere outfit - Insider

  • Piers Morgan criticized Daniel Craig's outfit for the "No Time To Die" premiere in London last night.
  • Morgan wrote on Twitter that Craig's outfit looks like "an Austin Powers tribute act."
  • He also said that Craig's character James Bond would never wear a "garish pink suede dinner jacket."

Piers Morgan criticized Daniel Craig's outfit for the "No Time To Die" premiere in London last night.

The 53-year-old arrived at the premiere for his last movie as the iconic spy, James Bond, in a pink suede blazer. HITC reports that the blazer was made by Anderson & Sheppard, a bespoke tailor and haberdashery based in Mayfair, London.

Morgan, who has come into conflict with many celebrities including the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, shared his disappointment for Craig's outfit to the premiere.

"O dear O (7) dear," he wrote on a Twitter post accompanied with a picture of Craig at the event. "James Bond would never wear a garish pink suede dinner jacket. You're supposed to be a steely-eyed assassin with exemplary sartorial taste, Mr Craig…. not an Austin Powers tribute act."

Insider has reached out to Daniel Craig's representatives for comment.

Amidst the conversation on who will replace Craig as James Bond, Morgan recently joked that he would be "Daniel Craig's replacement as 007."

He shared an image on Instagram of himself in a suit outside the Burlington Arcade and caption it: "The name's Morgan… Piers Morgan. #TimeToDie."

A post shared by Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan)

The TV personality also shared a similar photo to Twitter. When Bond fans criticized Morgan's joke, he responded with his acting credentials.

"Not an actor? I've been in nine movies that have cumulatively grossed over $2bn," he wrote on Twitter. According to IMDB, Morgan has 8 acting credits, three of which are for tv series.

Morgan has criticized Craig before. In 2018, after a picture surfaced of Craig carrying his daughter in a papoose, Morgan shared the picture to Twitter and commented: "Oh 007.. not you as well?!!! #papoose #emasculatedBond."

Numerous people defended Craig, including "Avengers" actor Chris Evans who wrote: "You really have to be so uncertain of your own masculinity to concern yourself with how another man carries his child. Any man who wastes time quantifying masculinity is terrified on the inside."

Last year, Morgan told The Sunday Times that the response to his tweet was "pointless and irrelevant in the general scheme of things."

Britney Spears' father criticizes potential replacement and pushes to end conservatorship - CBS News

Britney Spears' father, Jamie Spears, is claiming the man nominated to replace him is not qualified to serve as a conservator of the pop star's estate, according to court documents filed in Los Angeles on Monday.

Spears and her attorney recently nominated John Zabel, a certified public accountant, to replace her father should Jamie Spears step down or be removed from the arrangement. Her father vowed to step down when the "time is right" and said the conservatorship should be terminated soon — something his legal team repeated on Monday.

"There is no need for a temporary conservator because there is no vacancy in the position of conservator," Jamie Spears' attorneys wrote. "Mr. Spears continues to serve faithfully as Conservator of the Estate, as he has done for the past thirteen years. Mr. Spears has not and should not be suspended, especially since the Conservatorship should soon be terminated."

Jamie Spears' attorney said Zabel is not a "licensed professional fiduciary" and does not have the background or experience it takes to manage a $60 million conservatorship. The attorney also claimed Zabel was "scammed" out of $1 million of his own funds in a real estate scheme in 2008.

"This is not a situation where a layperson could step in and learn on the job, as it appears Mr. Zabel would have to do," the filing reads. "Therefore, it would not be in the best interests of the Conservatee for the Court."

Zabel and Britney's attorney did not immediately respond to CBS News' request for comment. Both parties will be back in court on Wednesday afternoon.

In a separate petition, Jamie Spears' attorney requested the judge presiding over the case, LA Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny, immediately focus on the request to end the conservatorship and have both sides attend a mandatory settlement or private mediation where all of Spears' pending petitions could be settled.

"The last thing this Court or this Conservatee needs or wants would be extended and expensive litigation over pending or final accounts and fee petitions," the filing reads. "There may be some issues to resolve, but despite the unfounded arguments of Conservatee's new counsel, Mr. Spears does not believe that they are numerous or complicated. If the parties were directed to attend a Mandatory Settlement Conference, or in the alternative a private mediation, and everyone would act in good faith, Mr. Spears believes that all pending issues could be resolved."

Spears has spent several years trying to oust her father from his role as conservator. In an explosive June testimony, she called the conservatorship "abusive," saying she felt minimized and her father controlled everything she did.

Recent allegations from the New York Times claim that Jamie Spears was responsible for illegally bugging his daughter's home and personal cellphones to record and monitor her private conversations, including those about the conservatorship. Spears' counsel asked the court to investigate the claims, calling the alleged surveillance "unfathomable" and saying it showed Jamie Spears should be removed from his role as soon as possible.

Jamie Spears' attorneys maintain there is no reason to replace him, saying all the evidence against him is flawed and inadmissible. They also claimed probate investigators have not discovered wrongdoing over the 13 years he served as a conservator.

"It is worth noting that for thirteen years, during the entire course of this conservatorship, probate investigators have conducted regular and recurring investigations based on interviews with numerous individuals, including medical professionals," Monday's filing reads.

"In all that time, to the best of Mr. Spears' knowledge and belief, not a single medical professional nor the report of a single probate investigator has recommended that Mr. Spears' presence as Conservator was harming Ms. Spears or that he should be replaced as Conservator of the Estate."

Khloe Kardashian Claps Back At Rumor She Was Banned From Met Gala - HollywoodLife

Khloe Kardashian responded to a fan on Twitter who asked about her status with the Met Gala and if she could clarify the rumor that she’d been ‘banned’ from the costume event.

Khloe Kardashian returned to Twitter and did a Q&A with fans to answer some of their burning questions. One fan asked about the Met Gala and whether the “rumors are true” regarding speculation Khloe is banned from the annual event. Khloe firmly denied the rumor and responded, “Absolutely NOT True.”

Khloe, as well as Kourtney Kardashian and Rob Kardashian, have never been to the Met Gala. Every year, rumors circulate that Khloe has been “banned” because she’s never attended. Now, Khloe is putting those rumors to bed once and for all.

Khloe’s sisters Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, and mom Kris Jenner have all become Met Gala staples over the years. Kendall dazzled in an Audrey Hepburn-inspired look at this year’s Met Gala, while Kim shocked everyone in a black Balenciaga look that covered her entire body — even her face! Kylie, who is expecting her second child, didn’t attend the 2021 Met Gala.

The reality star responded to other questions from fans on Twitter, including one about how True Thompson, now 3, is doing. “True’s is amazing! She is growing up way too quickly. I’m not sure how I feel about this,” Khloe wrote.

She also revealed what it’s been like filming her new Hulu show with her sisters. “The show is going great. We’re all so happy to be filming. It’s nice to be with each other endlessly all over again LOL,” Khloe tweeted.

The Kardashians usually make Halloween the Met Gala of holidays. The sisters are notorious for getting all dressed up along with their kids. However, Khloe’s a little late to the game this year. “We haven’t chosen a thing,” Khloe responded to a fan asking about Halloween costumes. “Normally I am further along than I am right now but I can’t think of some thing. True wants to be Moana and she wants me to be the pig, pua lol.”

Netflix acquires its first games studio, “Oxenfree” developer Night School - TechCrunch

Night School Studio, the independent game developer known for narrative-driven titles like “Oxenfree,” announced today it has been acquired by Netflix. This makes it the first games studio the streaming giant has purchased.

In Netflix’s announcement, Mike Verdu, vice president of game development, wrote Night School’s “commitment to artistic excellence and proven track record make them invaluable partners as we build out the creative capabilities and library of Netflix games together.” He added that Netflix plans to add “exclusive games designed for every kind of gamer and any level of play” that will be included with its membership, and have no ads or in-app purchases.

Night School Studio was founded in 2014 by Sean Krankel, a former senior game designer at Disney Interactive, and Adam Hines, who was a lead writer at Telltale Games. (Telltale Games was a Netflix partner, working on interactive shows like “Minecraft: Storymode” adventure before shutting down).

In a statement on Night School’s site, Krankel wrote “Netflix gives film, TV and now game makers an unprecedented canvas to create and deliver excellent entertainment to millions of people. Our explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers was such a natural pairing.”

For fans of Oxenfree and other Night School titles, Krankel reassured them that it will keep working on Oxenfree II and “cooking up new game worlds.”

“The Netflix team has shown the utmost care for protecting our studio culture and creative vision,” he wrote.

News of the acquisition comes less than a day after Netflix launched three new casual mobile games in Poland, Italy and Spain, a month after it released two games that were tie-ins to the “Stranger Things” series.

In Netflix’s second-quarter shareholder letter, the company said it is in the early stages of exploring its gaming model, and views gaming as another content category, like its original films, animation and reality TV shows.

Before working on mobile games, Netflix first ventured into interactive storytelling four years ago, when it launched “choose-your-own-adventure”-style children’s shows. The next year, it took the format to content for adult viewers with Black Mirror’s “Bandersnatch” episode. Since then, it’s added other interactive children’s shows like “Minecraft: Story Mode,” and “Emily’s Wonder Lab.”

'The Bachelor' New Host: Jesse Palmer Is Replacing Chris Harrison - Variety

Jesse Palmer will step into Chris Harrison’s shoes to hand out roses on ABC’s “The Bachelor,” as Variety has learned that Palmer has been named the new host of the hit dating show.

Palmer, a television broadcaster and former NFL quarterback, starred as “The Bachelor” himself in Season 5, which aired in 2004.

Palmer has a longstanding relationship with The Walt Disney Company, as a sports commentator on ESPN, and former special contributor on “Good Morning America” and across ABC News. He is currently hosting ABC’s summer series “The Ultimate Surfer,” and he previously hosted the network’s reality series “The Proposal” in 2018, which was created by “The Bachelor” boss Mike Fleiss. He has also hosted ABC’s Disney Parks’ holiday specials and ABC’s presentation of the NFL Draft.

“For more than 20 years, ‘The Bachelor’ has brought the world dozens of unforgettable love stories, including at one time, my own,” Palmer said in a statement. “Falling in love is one of life’s greatest gifts, and I am humbled by the opportunity to return to the show as host this season to offer the newest Bachelor advice gained from firsthand experience and I am grateful to play a small part in his journey.”

As of now, Palmer is officially signed on for Season 26 of “The Bachelor,’ which will air in 2022. However, insiders explain that the idea is for Palmer to continue with the franchise in the future, both on the flagship “Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” but nothing is set in stone — and the network has not renewed either series beyond their next upcoming seasons. Sources say that hosting format for future seasons of “Bachelor In Paradise,” which used to be led by Harrison, is still in flux. (The current season of the summer series is being hosted by a rotating slate of celebrity guest hosts, like David Spade and Lil Jon, which has received warm reviews both from critics and fans.)

Next season of “The Bachelorette,” which premieres next month, will be hosted by fan-favorites Tayshia Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe, the former stars of “The Bachelorette,” who co-hosted the most recent season of the female-fronted spinoff this past spring.

Palmer has been an ESPN analyst since 2007. Along with the news that he’ll be hosting “The Bachelor” Season 26, he has also signed an extension to will continue his studio role with the network during the 2021-2022 college football season.

Bringing Palmer back into Bachelor Nation creates synergy between one of Disney’s big money-makers — ESPN — and one of the company’s most lucrative franchises — “The Bachelor” — with the potential to bring the college football audience into Bachelor Nation’s mega-fandom.

“The Bachelor” bid farewell to Harrison earlier this year after a highly-publicized controversy over racist photos of winning contestant Rachael Kirkconnell, which Harrison defended in a now-infamous interview on “Extra” with former “Bachelorette” Rachel Lindsey. Harrison’s commentary garnered widespread criticism, causing him to apologize for causing “harm by wrongly speaking in a manner that perpetuates racism.” He later stepped aside, stating, “I invoked the term ‘woke police,’ which is unacceptable. I am ashamed over how uninformed I was. I was so wrong.”

Despite his apology statements, the Harrison scandal continued to escalate for months, before he departed the franchise that he had hosted from its launch in 2002. Variety reported that Harrison received a $9 million payout — a relatively low figure for the longstanding host, considering he had launched the show and made around $9 million for two years of work on the franchise.

Amid the Harrison drama, “The Bachelor” franchise played a game of temporary musical chairs with hosts. Emmanuel Acho lead the “After the Final Rose” episode at the end of Matt James’ season. Then, Adams and Bristowe co-hosted Katie Thurston’s season of “The Bachelorette” and are gearing up again for the premiere of Michelle Young’s hotly anticipated season, which premieres Oct. 19.

Palmer’s first season hosting heads into production this week, and will air in the new year, as every season of “The Bachelor” typically does. A source tells Variety that cameras start to roll tonight.

As Variety first reported, the next season of “The Bachelor,” hosted by Palmer, will star Clayton Echard, though ABC and Warner Bros. declined to comment and have not officially confirmed his casting. Insiders told Variety that producers fell in love with Echard — also a former football player, like Palmer -– when he was a contestant on Young’s season of “The Bachelorette,” and opted to give him another chance at love as the Season 26 lead.

When Palmer starred as “The Bachelor,” he was the first non-American star of the franchise as a Canadian, and was the youngest “Bachelor” suitor at 25 years old. His season ended with a winner in contestant Jessica Bowlin, but there was no proposal or engagement, and the couple split shortly after the finale aired, which drew in more than 13 million viewers.

Palmer played for the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers in the early 2000s. He also played in the Canadian Football League. After his time in professional sports and starring as “The Bachelor,” Palmer parlayed his athletic knowledge and television presence into a career as a sports commentator and TV personality. Aside from his work with ESPN and ABC, Palmer has also hosted for The Food Network and most recently was host of the nationally-syndicated entertainment newsmagazine “DailyMailTV.”

Zac Brown Band cancels Syracuse concert; singer tests positive for Covid - syracuse.com

Zac Brown Band has canceled its concert at the St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview after singer Zac Brown tested positive for Covid-19.

Brown said he was pushing “pause” on the tour, but officially canceled four shows, including at the St. Joe’s Amp in Syracuse this Saturday, Oct. 2, and at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) in Saratoga Springs on Sunday, Oct. 3. Refunds will be issued at the point of purchase.

“Despite taking precautions, I’ve tested positive for Covid-19,” Brown wrote in a note to fans Tuesday. “I am deeply disappointed this has happened, as touring is our life and performing live for our fans is the best part of our job. The bottom line is that I want to take every precaution to put the health and safety of our fans and crew first. We will resume the tour as soon as I have finished the CDC-mandated quarantine and it is safe for our band members and crew to do so.”

Brown’s “pause” announcement suggested the show was being postponed, but he did not announce any rescheduled dates.

The Grammy-winning country group had performed at the St. Joe’s Amp every year since the former Lakeview Amphitheater’s debut season in 2016, with sellout crowds in 2017 and 2018. ZBB was previously scheduled to perform at the Amp in 2020, but was one of the first artists to call off shows due to the Covid-19 pandemic last year. When “Comeback Tour” dates were announced in May, they included stops at Darien Lake (Sept. 4), Bethel Woods (Aug. 6) and SPAC — but initially left out Syracuse.

A surge in Covid cases fueled by the Delta variant has affected multiple tours, including two earlier shows at the St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview. KoRn canceled an August appearance at St. Joe’s Amp after singer Jonathan Davis tested positive for Covid, and Florida Georgia Line axed an Oct. 9 show “out of an abundance of caution.”

Only two more shows remain on the calendar for the Syracuse amphitheater this season: Slipknot’s Knotfest Roadshow on Oct. 5 and Chris Stapleton on Oct. 7.

Steven Van Zandt talks 'Sopranos' role and how his time in the E Street Band prepared him to play Silvio - Fox News

Actor and musician Steven Van Zandt is opening up about his life and career ahead of the release of his upcoming memoir "Unrequited Infatuations."

Thanks to the upcoming release of the prequel movie "The Many Saints of Newark," renewed attention has been placed on the hit HBO drama "The Sopranos," where Van Zandt played tough-as-nails childhood friend of the titular Tony Soprano, Silvio Dante. However, ahead of the release of his memoir, the artist explained that it was his time in the music industry that truly shaped his Silvio character.

In 1983, during a recording session on Bruce Springsteen’s "Born in the USA," Van Zandt walked away as the bandana-wearing guitarist of the E Street Band after a fight with The Boss. That kicked off a difficult solo career that was eventually saved by a foray into acting with "The Sopranos" and "Lilyhammer."

However, speaking to the Asbury Park Press, Van Zandt notes that his attitude as a band member from the streets of New Jersey is what initially attracted series creator David Chase to him — not just for what he would bring to the dynamic on-camera, but off it as well.

TONY SOPRANO CHARACTER WILL APPEAR IN PREQUEL FILM 'THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK'

"Yeah, it’s the ensemble thing, the ensemble thing is the band thing and that was my thing. I was determined, I’m going to turn this ‘Sopranos’ cast into a band, somehow, and that’s what kind of happened," he explained. "Not just from me – David Chase was a band guy, as it starts with him, obviously. That was our main bonding, that we were both band guys and that’s what happened in the end. ‘The Sopranos’ became quite a tight group."

'THE SOPRANOS' PREQUEL STAR REVEALS DETAILS ON UPCOMING MOVIE 'THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK'

The actor also believes that his persona as a man of the people from New Jersey also helped him give "The Sopranos" a little bit of street credibility, which was something Chase found very attractive given his larger vision for the show.

"Oh yeah, I think there was some of that going on with a lot of the cast members because everybody turned him down. Everybody turned the show down because he was insisting on filming in New Jersey. They were like, ‘What are you, nuts? What’s the matter with you? No way that could succeed,’" he joked. "So you’re not wrong in emphasizing that connection because for good or worse, we were certainly New Jersey."

The star’s comments echo those he made in a recent interview with The Associated Press in which he noted that Silvio didn’t feel much like acting. He was merely playing a part in a larger group dynamic that he usually fell into in real life.

"Before you know it, I’m playing that role that I have, in fact, played in real life," he explained. "Somebody has to be that guy in order for a family or a band or anything else to actually function properly. It ended up, very, very natural. And I think that’s why it worked so well."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Britney Spears' medication was allegedly increased while filming 'X Factor,' Netflix doc claims - Fox News

Netflix dropped its bombshell new documentary on Britney Spears and the web of alleged lies and control tactics spun around the pop star to keep her conservatorship in place

Many stunning allegations were made in the film, helmed by Erin Lee Carr and Jenny Eliscu, as they spoke to Spear's former manager Sam Lutfi, her ex-boyfriend Adnan Ghalib, and old assistant/friend Felicia Culotta, and many others who were all once in the singer's inner circle.

One of the more shocking claims was when Eliscu read from documents that detail how Spears was allegedly mistreated while working on "The X Factor" in 2012.

Spears had a $15 million deal for the star to serve as a judge on the talent competition series but an alleged medical evaluation while under her conservatorship said that the deal caused Spears "undue pressure."

BRITNEY SPEARS' LAWYER REACTS TO NEW DOC EXPOSING HOW SINGER WAS ALLEGEDLY SPIED ON

Her manager at the time, Larry Rudolph, reportedly pushed forward and claimed that backing out would look bad and fuel rumors of Spears being unwell.

Precautions were reportedly put in place to help Spears, including the "mandatory" presence of her then-fiancé Jason Trawick on the set.

Britney Spears' conservatorship signed a $15 million deal for the star to serve as a judge on the talent competition series.

Spears' medication was also allegedly increased depending on if she was working that day.

"There’s different dosages on ‘non-work days’ and work days,’" Eliscu says in the doc while looking at paperwork. "On one hand, Jamie and the team valued the benefits of stimulants for Britney’s performance. This had been the case for her tours and for her participation on ‘The X Factor.’ By the same token, Jamie wanted Britney not to take stimulants. This contradiction has not been resolved."

BRITNEY SPEARS' FORMER SECURITY STAFFER CLAIMS HER BEDROOM WAS BUGGED WITH AUDIO RECORDING DEVICE

The type of medication wasn't made clear but during Spears' June 23 conservatorship hearing she explicitly told the court that she was forced to take lithium (commonly used to treat bipolar disorder) against her will.

"It’s a strong drug. You can go mentally impaired if you stay on it longer than 5 months," she told a judge at the time. "I felt drunk, I couldn’t even have a conversation with my mom or dad about anything."

Britney Spears' medication was allegedly increased depending on if she was working that day or off

In the hearing, she also criticized the care or lack thereof her father Jamie Spears allegedly forced her under, which included six different nurses and several psychiatric evaluations.

"My family didn’t do a God d--m thing," she fumed. "Anything I had to do, [my dad] was the one who approved all of it. My whole family did nothing."

BRITNEY SPEARS' FATHER ALLEGEDLY MONITORED HER TEXTS AND CALLS 'FOR HER PROTECTION'

Spears has previously claimed she was forced to perform against her will, according to a New York Times report.

Back in 2020, the pop icon's then-lawyer Samuel Ingham said she fears her father and will not resume her music career as long as he controls her estate via her conservatorship.

"My client has informed me that she is afraid of her father," Ingham alleged. "She will not perform again if her father is in charge of her career."

Blake Shelton Says Ariana Grande "Stabbed Me in the Back" on The Voice - Cosmopolitan

Looks like Blake Shelton and Ariana Grande's rivalry is continuing over on The Voice. During Monday's episode, both Blake and Kelly Clarkson wanted singer Jeremy Rosado on their team—and Blake asked for Ariana's support. Buuut she went ahead and chose Team Kelly, telling Jeremy "You have so many really special parts of your voice. And I think Kelly might be able to help you." She added, "I do think Kelly might be the right fit in this case," saying to Blake, "I'm sorry."

Blake was clearly not thrilled, telling Ari "it's on now" and saying to cameras "I can't believe Ariana just did that. That's a slap in the face. The friendship is over." He then interrupted Ariana's on-camera interview, saying "You stabbed me in the back. I was right there on the edge of the cliff, and you pushed me off."

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

As a reminder, Ariana is killing it on The Voice, and there are even (false) reports that producers want to replace Blake with someone younger because of Ari's popularity. Turns out Blake straight-up sent Ariana an article about these rumors headlined "Producers at 'The Voice' May Replace Blake Shelton After Ariana Grande Brings a 'Fresh' Energy," and added "Thanks a lot Ari... Thanks a fuckin' lot."

Doubt Blake Shelton is going anywhere anytime soon considering a) his whole good-natured rivalry with Ariana is a ratings goldmine, and b) he's been on The Voice since day one, soooo!

Anderson Cooper won't leave his fortune to his son: Why 'I don't believe in passing on huge amounts of money' - CNBC

Add Anderson Cooper to the list of the rich and famous who are publicly announcing that they won't be leaving their fortunes to their kids.

The CNN anchor and son of the late Gloria Vanderbilt says that he won't leave a "pot of gold" behind for his son when he's gone. Instead, Cooper will follow his mother's lead, who he said once told him, "College will be paid for, and then you gotta get on it.'"

"I don't believe in passing on huge amounts of money," the 54-year-old said on the latest episode of the "Morning Meeting" podcast, where he was promoting his new book on the Vanderbilts. "I'm not that interested in money ... I don't intend to have some sort of pot of gold for my son."

Cooper, who became a father in April 2020 and who reportedly earns around $12 million a year from CNN, according to Yahoo Finance, had previously said on Howard Stern's radio program that he believes large inheritances kill a person's drive to succeed.

"I think it's an initiative sucker," he said in 2014. "I think it's a curse."

Cooper is far from alone in his view on inheritances: a recent survey of American millionaires found that nearly 70% were worried about the possibility of leaving too much money for their heirs, fearing the wealth would be "used irresponsibly" or that it "would cause beneficiaries to be lazy."

Investor and O'Shares ETFs chairman Kevin O'Leary shared Cooper's outlook in a recent interview with CNBC Make It. "You curse a child when you de-risk their lives" by leaving them too much money, O'Leary said.

"No free lunch," he added. "It's just the wrong thing to do."

"James Bond" actor Daniel Craig and famed investor Warren Buffett both also expressed their opposition to leaving large amounts of money to their kids, with Craig saying he finds the practice "distasteful."
