4 Are Charged in Overdose Death of Michael K. Williams - The New York Times

New York City detectives pieced together the fatal sale to Mr. Williams using surveillance video and license plate readers, according to court records.

The authorities in Manhattan announced on Wednesday the arrests of four men who they said sold a deadly dose of fentanyl-laced heroin to Michael K. Williams, the Brooklyn actor who was best known for his portrayal of a gay stickup man in the television series “The Wire.”

The men were part of a drug trafficking crew that operated in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn and sold the deadly dose to Mr. Williams on Sept. 5 in a hand-to-hand transaction that was captured on surveillance video, the authorities said.

“This is a public health crisis,” Damian Williams, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, said in a statement. “And it has to stop. Deadly opioids like fentanyl and heroin don’t care about who you are or what you’ve accomplished.”

Mr. Williams, 54, was found dead in his apartment on Sept. 6. The medical examiner ruled that the death was caused by “acute intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl, p-fluorofentanyl, heroin and cocaine.”

Even though they knew that Mr. Williams died after buying the heroin, the same crew members continued to sell fentanyl-laced heroin in broad daylight amid residential apartment buildings in Brooklyn and Manhattan, according to a criminal complaint.

The charges against the four men stemmed from an investigation that began early last year into the trafficking group, the complaint said. The four defendants, all of Brooklyn, included Irvin Cartagena, 39; Hector Robles, 57; Luis Cruz, 56; and Carlos Macci, 70.

Mr. Williams was best known for his role as Omar Little, the shotgun-wielding robber of drug dealers on “The Wire,” the five-season epic that aired on HBO in the 2000s. The show, which explored the underworld of crime and drugs in Baltimore and its relationship with institutions like the police and school system, is widely viewed by critics as among the best in television history — and Mr. Williams’s character was perhaps the most beloved by audiences.

His depiction of Omar, an openly gay man in the ecosystem of murder and drugs, was seen as a groundbreaking and rare portrayal of Black masculinity on television at a time when police dramas often struck a different tone. Even beyond “The Wire,” he was known for the intimate and nuanced approaches he brought to his characters, which landed him five Emmy Award nominations over his career.

Before his death, Mr. Williams had also openly discussed his own personal challenges in navigating drug addiction.

Mr. Williams had been raised in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, growing up in a working-class housing complex now known as Flatbush Gardens, where he drew inspiration for his acting. In the days after his death, communities across New York held memorials for his life, including in his former neighborhood. There, longtime residents said that even as he found success in Hollywood, he retained his down-to-earth spirit and regularly gave back to the community where he grew up.

“There are so many people here — beautiful and beautifully flawed people — and I want all of their stories to be told,” Mr. Williams said of the residents of the housing complex in an interview with The New York Times in 2017.

First-time nominees Duran Duran, Dolly Parton, Eminem, A Tribe Called Quest lead Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's Class of 2022 ballot - Yahoo Entertainment

The nominations for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2022 have just been announced — and there are a whopping 17 contenders this year, instead of the typical 15, which according to a Hall source is due to a tie during the nominating committee’s electing process.

Hall voters will have especially difficult time whittling that list down to the mere five to seven artists who will be celebrated at the Hall's 37th annual induction ceremony, as this year’s super-sized ballot features several first-time and past nominees who arguably should have been inducted long ago.

Seven of 17 nominees in the Performer category this year are first-timers: new wave idols Duran Duran, country legend Dolly Parton, hip-hop pioneers A Tribe Called Quest and Eminem, pop/soul veteran and American Idol judge Lionel Richie (whose former band the Commodores has yet to be nominated), '70s singer-songwriter Carly Simon, and ‘90s indie-rock shapeshifter Beck. Eminem, aka Marshall Mathers, is the only artist on the ballot to be nominated in a first year of eligibility.

Among the past nominees getting another shot this year is rock powerhouse Pat Benatar, who was nominated in 2020 and topped the fan vote, but was shockingly snubbed. Art-punk mavericks Devo, glam-rock pioneers the New York Dolls, avant singer-songwriter Kate Bush, British metal titans Judas Priest, and synth duo the Eurythmics, who have all been nominated twice previously, are also back in the running.

Detroit protopunk protest band MC5 is up for a sixth nomination; their logical successors, ‘90s political alt-rockers Rage Against the Machine, are up for their fifth. Rounding out the ballot are Afrobeat trailblazer Fela Kuti and soul diva/Twitter queen Dionne Warwick, who were both nominated and passed over last year.

“This year’s ballot recognizes a diverse group of incredible artists, each who has had a profound impact on the sound of youth culture,” Rock Hall chairman John Sykes said in a statement Wednesday. “Their music not only moved generations, but also influenced the sound of countless artists that followed.”

In 2020, Rolling Stone magnate Jann Wenner stepped down as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's chairman and was replaced by MTV co-founder Sykes — a development that could bode well for many of the ‘80s nominees on this year’s ballot, particularly fan favorites Benatar and Duran Duran. In 2015, an anonymous industry insider once famously told Billboard that darlings of the early-MTV era were viewed as “weird outcasts... who wear mascara” by the Hall’s old guard.

“I have a problem with the institutionalization of rock 'n’ roll,” Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon told Yahoo Entertainment in 2015, when he and bandmate John Taylor were asked about the Hall's longtime Duran snub. “I don’t like going places where you’ve got to wear a black tie. I just feel like saying, 'F*** off!’ I think the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in itself is not a bad thing, but I don’t feel that I have to be placed alongside Jerry Lee Lewis, James Brown, the Rolling Stones, U2, and all those other guys for me to have validity.” However, Le Bon and Taylor later attended the 2019 ceremony to induct their childhood heroes Roxy Music into the Hall.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2022 inductees will be announced in May; the induction ceremony will take place this falI. The ceremony's date, venue, and ticket-sale information will be announced later this year. Starting today, fans can vote at rockhall.com or at an interactive kiosk at the Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland.

Moses J. Moseley, 'Walking Dead' actor, dead at 31 - CNN

(CNN)Moses J. Moseley, who portrayed one of the zombies on "The Walking Dead," has died, his talent manager Gail Tassell confirmed to CNN Tuesday.

He was 31.
"We are heartbroken by his loss and he will forever be in our hearts and deeply missed," Tassell told CNN. "He was a very beautiful person and an extremely talented actor. There really are no words to express the tragic loss of Moses. We just absolutely loved him."
Tassell said Moseley's death is currently being investigated after he went missing recently.
His family contacted the in-vehicle safety and security company OnStar, which was able to track and locate Moseley's car in the Hudson Bridge area of Stockbridge, Georgia, where his body was located, according to Tassell.
Moseley worked on "The Walking Dead" from 2012 to 2015 and portrayed one of the zombies that followed the character Michonne, played by Danai Gurira.
Other acting work included his appearances in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "Queen of the South" and "Watchmen."

Rihanna’s dad on pregnancy news: ‘She’s going to be a good mom’ - Page Six

Rihanna has made it no secret that she wants to be a mom.

Now, the superstar has confirmed her first pregnancy by strolling through Harlem with boyfriend A$AP Rocky — and her growing belly on full display.

“I’m ecstatic,” the singer’s dad, Ronald Fenty, told Page Six from his home in Barbados on Monday, adding: “I’m so happy that I jumped for joy. I’m still so excited.

“Rihanna always said that she wanted children, she loves kids. She always takes care of her cousins’ kids…she’s going to be a good mom.”

Fenty met Rocky after his daughter brought him home to the Caribbean island in December 2020, calling him “a very cool guy” and adding: “I like him.”

Rihanna and her father, a former alcoholic and crack addict, have had a troubled relationship over the years.

Last September, Rihanna scrapped the lawsuit she had brought against her dad, accusing him of misusing her name to benefit his own entertainment company, just weeks before they were meant to meet in court. It’s believed they settled the case.

Now Fenty seems to have reconciled with his daughter (real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty). He told Page Six that Rihanna called him with the news that he will be a grandpa on Sunday night.

“I just got the news from her last night, and she sent me some photos,” he said. “I’m just over the moon. She’s beautiful inside and out.”

The singer, who found global fame at 17 with her version of “Pon de Replay,” told British Vogue in 2020 that she had turned her attention to motherhood after her long-term relationship with Saudi billionaire businessman Hassan Jameel ended.

She said: “Since I turned 32, I’m realizing life is really short.

“You don’t have a lot of time to tolerate s–t, you know? You put so much on your plate. When you’re overwhelmed, you need to start cutting things out. And I’m overwhelmed too much…I know I will want to live differently.”

Asked where she pictured herself in 10 years, she replied: “Ten years? I’ll be 42! I’ll be ancient…I’ll have kids — three or four of ’em.”

Rihanna even made it clear that she could be a single mom, saying: “Hell, yeah!”

“I feel like society makes me want to feel like, ‘Oh, you got it wrong…’ They diminish you as a mother if there’s not a dad in your kids’ lives. But the only thing that matters is happiness, that’s the only healthy relationship between a parent and a child. That’s the only thing that can raise a child truly, is love.”

But she won’t have to do it on her own as she appears to be fully committed to Rocky (real name Rakim Mayers).

An onlooker at Carbone restaurant in Soho earlier this month saw the couple as they shared an intimate dinner, telling Page Six: “Rocky was looking at Rihanna adoringly, and Rihanna looked so gorgeous. The hostess had to move them to a different table to accommodate Rihanna’s bump, and when she got up she was stroking her stomach.”

Both equally successful and fashionable — Rocky has appeared on the cover of GQ — they also share troubled backgrounds.

Dating rumors swirled around the pair back in 2013 when they toured together. Their romance was confirmed in November 2020.

Rihanna once recounted to Rolling Stone how her father allegedly beat her mother, Monica Braithwaite, and once hit her as well. She said she suffered debilitating stress headaches as a child that stopped once her parents divorced when she was 14.

After the divorce, Braithwaite worked full time and Rihanna took over as her younger brother Rajad’s caretaker.

“I grew up fast, kind of like the second mom,” Rihanna told The Guardian.

Rocky — whose parents Adrian Mayer and Renee Black emigrated from Barbados to the US — was born and brought up in Harlem.

Rocky started rapping at eight years old, but when he was 12, his father was jailed for drug dealing. A year later, his 20-year-old brother, Ricky, was shot dead by a rival dealer. Rocky was 13 at the time, and on his way to school when his mom told him the news.

With his dad behind bars, Rocky, his mom and two sisters spent time living in shelters. They moved around frequently, from Harlem to the Bronx to Philadelphia and North Carolina. He saw “a lot of crazy s–t” growing up, he told the Red Bull Academy in 2015.

Rocky also drifted into life on the streets, starting with selling weed as a teen before moving on to crack. At the age of 16, he spent two weeks in Rikers Island for firing a gun at a neighborhood bully in Harlem.

He was “never no big-time hustler,” he insisted to journalist Dorian Lynskey in 2015, making just enough to “support my studio time” but quitting dealing before getting sucked too far in.

“That lifestyle’s wack,” Rocky said.

Rocky was 23 when he signed a $3 million major-label deal after dropping his breakout mixtape, “Live. Love. A$AP.” in 2011.

Meanwhile, Rihanna has won nine Grammy awards, acted in Hollywood movies and runs her own Fenty Beauty and Fenty Fashion lines, but has had less luck in love.

She ended up in the headlines after ex-lover, rapper Chris Brown, assaulted her on the night of the 2009 Grammys. Brown later pleaded guilty to a felony assault and was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to stay at least 50 yards from Rihanna at all times. Despite the violent incident and concern from fans, the pair embarked on a second attempt at romance in 2013 — but they broke up for good that same year.

Following her split from Jameel in January 2020 after a three-year relationship, it wasn’t long before Rihanna got together with Rocky.

Rumors about their status began circulating as early as 2013, when Rocky opened for Rihanna’s Diamonds World Tour. People magazine confirmed they were dating in November 2020.

Both Rocky and Rihanna seem to have brought some peace to each other. They spent 2020 driving from LA to NYC on a massive tour bus.

As Rocky told GQ last May, they made it their very own Great American Roadtrip. He said they listened to the Stones, the Grateful Dead and Curtis Mayfield and stopped in a few national parks. Rocky told how he dropped acid and made his own clothes, beatnik-style — sewing, patching, and tie-dyeing shirts and pants on the bus.

He called Rihanna “The One,” saying: “She amounts to probably, like, a million of the other ones.

“I think when you know, you know. She’s the One.”

He said she has influenced his new music, and that he was overjoyed when she took him home to Barbados two years ago.

“It was like a homecoming thing,” he said. “It was crazy. I always imagined what it would be like for my dad, before he came to America. And I got to visit those places, and believe it or not, there was something nostalgic about it. It was foreign but familiar.”

Asked if he’s ready to be a dad, he replied: “If that’s in my destiny, absolutely…I think I’d be an incredible, remarkably, overall amazing dad. I would have a very fly child. Very.”
