‘S.N.L.’ Spends a Night at the Oscars With Will Smith - The New York Times

The comedian Jerrod Carmichael hosted this weekend’s “Saturday Night Live,” which found several ways to address the Academy Awards incident in which Will Smith slapped Chris Rock.

In his opening monologue on “Saturday Night Live,” the host and comedian Jerrod Carmichael swore he wouldn’t do it. “I’m not gonna talk about it,” he said. He didn’t even have to say what it was.

But sure enough, “S.N.L.” found several ways to take on the widely discussed incident from last weekend’s Academy Awards, in which Will Smith slapped Chris Rock (a former “S.N.L.” cast member) after he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.

The Slap was addressed most directly in a sketch that aired about halfway through the program, which cast Chris Redd as Smith and Carmichael as a seat filler at the Oscars show who found himself next to Smith in the moments before Rock made his remarks.

Carmichael at first professed to be a fan of Smith’s, saying that he admired his film “The Pursuit of Happyness” and still used his song “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” as his ringtone. He asked if he could take a selfie just as they noticed Rock had come onstage.

Next, we heard the sound of Rock’s voice uttering his now notorious joke: “Jada, I love you. ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can’t wait to see it.”

Redd said to Carmichael, “Hey, I’ll be right back, man,” and strode out of the shot.

Then we heard the slap and watched as the expression on Carmichael’s face changed from delight to bafflement.

As Redd nonchalantly returned to his seat, he asked Carmichael, “Hey, so where you from, man?”

A shaken Carmichael stammered out his response: “Uh, nowhere, man,” he said.

Redd continued to maintain a conversation with Carmichael while occasionally shouting expletive-laden remarks at the stage.

Soon, the two were joined by Kyle Mooney, playing another seat filler who was oblivious to Carmichael’s nonverbal warnings to stay away.

“Oh my God, we’re right next to Will Smith?” Mooney exclaimed. “I gotta tweet this.” He glanced at his phone: “And he’s trending,” he said as he suddenly became unnerved.

Redd, still buoyant, introduced himself to Mooney and asked, “What’s your name?”

“I don’t — they didn’t give me one,” he uncomfortably replied.

Redd said the past two years had been complicated because Covid, Zoom meetings and — his voice trembling here — “Red Table Talk.”

When Carmichael’s phone rang, he tried to stop it from playing “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It,” but Redd told him not to switch it off. “Don’t answer that, man!” he said. “Let it ring! Everything is beautiful, y’all!”

At the outset of his monologue, Carmichael made his claim that he wouldn’t discuss the Slap — “Aren’t you sick of talking about it?” he asked the audience — while continuing to reflect on it, without actually describing it or naming its participants.

Though he was excited about the topic at the start of the week, Carmichael said, “By Friday, I made a vow to myself — I promised myself I would never, ever talk about it again.” That changed after Lorne Michaels, the “S.N.L.” creator and executive producer, made a visit to his dressing room, Carmichael said.

“He was like, I think you need to talk about it,” he said. “He said the nation needs to heal.”

Carmichael also talked about his new HBO special, “Rothaniel,” in which he comes out as gay. Reacting to applause from the audience, Carmichael said it was “nice but an expected response in New York.”

He continued, “That’s actually why I live here. If you say you’re gay in New York, you can ride the bus for free and people just give you pizza. Honestly, if you’re gay in New York, you get to host ‘Saturday Night Live.’ This is the gayest thing you could possibly do.”

In the closing moments of his monologue, Carmichael took the opportunity to address former President Obama. “And unfortunately, I have some news for you, Barack,” he said. “You’re not going to like this. We need you back because I think you’re going to have to talk about it. The nation needs to heal.”

The leadoff sketch this weekend was a parody of “Fox & Friends” that featured Alex Moffat, Heidi Gardner and Mikey Day as the hosts Steve Doocy, Ainsley Earhardt and Brian Kilmeade; Kenan Thompson and Kate McKinnon as Justice Clarence Thomas and Ginni Thomas; and Cecily Strong as Judge Jeanine Pirro.

The sketch concluded with James Austin Johnson, in his recurring role as former President Trump, who couldn’t resist offering his thoughts on the Slap.

“I did see slap,” Johnson said as Trump. “I enjoyed slap. I was very impressed by Hitch. Quite an arm on Hitch. I always knew Hitch had an arm.” Still, he said the Oscars had been a sad night: “That kind of behavior is not going to help Kevin James get a date with Allegra Cole, I’ll tell you that,” he explained.

Over at the Weekend Update desk, the anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che continued to riff on — what else? — the Slap.

Jost began:

Intelligence officials are saying that Vladimir Putin is being misinformed by advisers about how badly the Russian military is performing in Ukraine. Which is kind of like Will Smith’s agent telling him, “You crushed it at the Oscars.” Will Smith — for those of you that don’t know — walked onstage during the Academy Awards and slapped Chris Rock after he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. Which I think was a disgraceful act that sets a terrible precedent for having to defend your wife at awards shows.

Che added:

During his acceptance speech, Will Smith said, “Love will make you do crazy things.” You know what else makes you do crazy things? Crazy. But I understand where Will’s coming from. You can’t expect him to sit there and watch another man jump all over his wife without signing an N.D.A.

Jost continued the thread:

Yesterday, Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He wasn’t going to, but then Jada gave him that look. If Will Smith had been expelled, he would have joined a small group of people kicked out of the Academy including Bill Cosby, Roman Polanski and Harvey Weinstein. Or, as they’re also known, “Bad Boys for Life.”

Just when it seemed that every celebrity you could think of had commented on the Slap, “S.N.L.” found one with a few more thoughts to share: O.J. Simpson, who was played by Thompson in a visit to the Weekend Update desk.

Asked by Che whether he sided with Smith or Rock, Thompson affably responded, “You know me — I hate conflict.” He also claimed not to understand Rock’s reference to “G.I. Jane.” When it was explained to him that it was a movie from the 1990s, Thompson replied, “The ’90s? Oh, I don’t remember nothing from the ’90s.”

Lee and Mo'Nique publicly made up during the standup comic's set for her show Mo’Nique and Friends: April Fools Day with The Queen of Comedy.

It was held at St. George Theatre in Staten Island and Daniels surprised the audience when he stepped on stage and hugged the talent.

'I am so sorry for hurting you in any way that I did,' he said to her.

A fan captured the moment and posted it on Twitter along with the caption, 'So [I] went to see #monique & she brought out #leedaniels #NoAprilFools.'

The director also said during the set, 'Y’all, and she was my best friend — my best friend. Y’all think that Precious was just … That was God working, through both of us.

'And we’re gonna f*****g do it again!' he exclaimed in reference to their new Netflix plans.

Both stars shared photos of them embracing each other on Instagram and wrote, 'No caption needed.'

Mo'Nique added, 'I LOVE US 4REAL,' with a red heart emoji.

Following an auction at the top of the year, Netflix obtained Demon House, an exorcism film package.

It was originally supposed to star Octavia Spencer, but the actress had a scheduling conflict, prompting Daniels to hire Mo'Nique.

Mo'Nique and Lee last worked together on the critically-acclaimed 2009 movie Precious, which earned the performer an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

The movie star — full name Monique Angela Hicks — later said she was blackballed from Hollywood for refusing to do awards season press for the project unless she received additional pay.

The award-winning actress also mentioned Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry when discussing the blackballing disagreement.

The director had most recently responded in 2018 when he told TMZ, 'I respect her [as an] actor because she gave me her soul, but I gave her my soul.

'And for that she was given the Golden Globe and the Academy Award … and it breaks my heart that she feels that we blackballed her.'

He emphasized, 'No one blackballed her. Mo’Nique blackballed her. And for her to continue to speak about Oprah and myself and Tyler is disrespectful.'

But the two have put the past behind them as they prepare to work on their new project, about a family in Indiana whose children have been overcome by demons.

Hicks will portray a social worker who assists the family through multiple exorcisms.

The film will also feature Glenn Close, Andra Day, Rob Morgan (Don't Look Up), Caleb McLaughlin (Stranger Things), and Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard).

Production on the movie will begin this June.

Daniels took to his Instagram Stories on Friday to share a meme in reference to the upcoming feature.

It said, 'Glenn Close. Aunjanue Ellis. Andra Day. Caleb McLaughlin. In ONE film?! Baby, Lee Daniels hit the JACKPOT!'

Rihanna Is Date Night Casual with A$AP Rocky in ‘Baby Daddy’ T-Shirt, Denim and Air Jordans - Yahoo Life

Rihanna gave her viral pregnancy style a sporty spin for a Hollywood date night with A$AP Rocky last night.

While seeing a movie together, the musician couple stepped out on Hollywood Boulevard. Rihanna was casually dressed in a pair of wide-legged blue jeans, as well as a printed white graphic T-shirt that read “Who Dat Is?” and “Das Jus My Baby Daddy” with an image of two cartoon mouses — a cheeky reference to herself and Rocky. Completing her look was a gold pendant necklace, color-blocked navy track jacket and a white trucker hat with “AWGE” lettering.

A$AP Rocky took a similar approach, matching Rihanna in a pair of blue jeans with layered cuffs, navy hoodie and the same headwear. Completing his look was a pair of fluffy tan ankle boots with exaggerated soles.

When it came to footwear, Rihanna continued her casual streak with Air Jordan sneakers. Though the musician’s footwear was slightly washed-out by camera flashes, she did lace into a pair of men’s Union Air Jordan 4 SP sneakers in a white and multicolored red, yellow, blue and beige “Guava Ice” colorway. The $877 style included leather, rubber and mesh panels with logo-embossed counters, as well as ankle padding for added comfort.

Rihanna’s pregnancy style has included a range of statement-making footwear, spanning from the aforementioned Jordan sneakers to lace-up Manolo Blahnik sandals and thigh-high Amina Muaddi boots. A hotly-debated footwear topic during pregnancies, her advocacy for wearing heels and dramatic clothing has created a widespread discussion on the importance of individualistic dressing and embracing glamour. She’s even taken to social media with humorous posts throughout her recent trimesters.

“I can’t stand me…” the singer captioned a photo dump on Instagram earlier this season.

For Rihanna, no shoe is too bold — or heel too high. The “We Found Love” singer has worn a wide range of shoes over the years, including sky-high heels and chunky sneakers. Rihanna’s red carpet styles often include strappy sandals, platforms and pointed-toe pumps by Amina Muaddi, Prada and Tom Ford that coordinate with her outfits. Her off-duty styles also include similarly daring sandals and boots by Celine, Givenchy and Saint Laurent.

However, she’s also known for wearing statement sneakers by New Balance, Nike and Puma. Aside from her repertoire of stylish shoes, Rihanna’s also found success in launching her own Savage X Fenty, Fenty Beauty and Fenty labels in the fashion and beauty industries. Additionally, she’s served as a collaborator, campaign star and muse for top brands that including Dior, Chanel and Manolo Blahnik.

'Sixth Sense' star Haley Joel Osment's tribute to 'true legend' Bruce Willis - New York Post

I see love, people.

Haley Joel Osment still holds his “Sixth Sense” costar Bruce Willis in the highest regard.

Osment, 33, shared a beautiful tribute to the 67-year-old action legend following news of the latter’s aphasia diagnosis and retirement from Hollywood.

“It’s been difficult to find the right words for someone I’ve always looked up to—first on the big screen, and then by some wild stroke of luck, in person,” Osment wrote alongside a throwback snap of the “Death Becomes Her” star on social media Thursday.

The “Pay It Forward” star added, “He’s a true legend who has enriched all of our lives with a singular career that spans nearly half a century.”

“I am so grateful for what I got to witness firsthand, and for the enormous body of work he built for us to enjoy for years and years to come,” he continued.

Osment concluded his touching statement by offering more kind words and heartfelt support: ‘”I just wanted to express the respect and deep admiration I have for Bruce and his family as they move forward with the courage and high spirits that have always defined them.”

Osment starred as a disturbed kid named Cole in the 1999 supernatural thriller “Sixth Sense.” Willis portrayed a child psychologist who attempts to help Cole navigate his ability to communicate with dead people.

“Sixth Sense” director M. Night Shyamalan also penned a tribute to Willis earlier this week.

“All my love and respect to my big brother Bruce Willis. I know his wonderful family is surrounding him with support and strength. He will always be that hero on that poster on my wall as kid,” the “Glass” filmmaker tweeted.

Osment previously discussed with The Post the film’s ever-lasting legacy and his career as a child star. He noted that hearing the drama’s iconic line — “I see dead people” — has become “easier” for him.

“That’s become easier as I’ve gotten older because I don’t look quite the same as I did when that film came out,” he said. “But it’s kinda cool the film has had that long of a life span.”

Willis’ family announced on March 30 that he was diagnosed with the brain disorder and would be stepping back from Hollywood.

“To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,” the “Die Hard” actor’s family said in a statement.

“This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support,” they added. “As Bruce always says, ‘Live it up’ and together we plan to do just that.”

Bruce Willis' wife, Emma Heming, 'grateful' for love after aphasia diagnosis - Page Six

Bruce Willis’ wife, Emma Heming, thanked fans for their outpouring of love after announcing the actor was diagnosed with aphasia.

“your love, support, compassion, prayers really help. I’m grateful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Heming, 43, wrote in a post on her Instagram Story Thursday.

Willis’ family announced in a statement Wednesday that he would be “stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him” due to aphasia, a condition that affects the ability to communicate.

“This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support,” the family said. “We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him.”

Page Six exclusively reported that Willis, 67, had been having trouble remembering his lines on the sets of his recent films.

“He was having cognitive problems; they all knew Bruce was having problems,” an insider told us. “Everybody knew, the cast and crew. His family has stepped in; they moved in to take care of him.”

The source added that the “Die Hard” star was using “earpieces … for them to feed him the lines” and that “it was increasingly difficult to have him on screen.” Additionally, a body double was apparently being used, not just for stunts but to “maximize” his screen time.

“He could not act anymore,” the insider said.

Willis and Heming tied the knot in March 2009 and share two daughters together: Mabel, 10, and Evelyn, 7.

Ahead of the news of her husband’s diagnosis, the model shared a photo to Instagram on March 21 in which she and Willis had tears in their eyes at their wedding.

“13 years ago, those wedding speeches really sent us over the edge 🤍😂 ,” she wrote.

The Emmy winner also shares three daughters — Rumer, 33, Scout, 30, and Tallulah, 28 — with ex-wife Demi Moore, to whom he was married from November 1987 to October 2000.

Page Six exclusively reported Thursday that Moore, 59, has been secretly dating Eleven Madison Park restaurateur Daniel Humm.
