Officials said a committee has been formed to examine the matter and suggest new food items where the nutritional quality will be maintained.The department received feedback indicating that many children are not eating meals at anganwadi centres due to a lack of taste.
In 2022, the department initiated a new system of quality nutrition wherein children aged three to six years at anganwadis were given prepared meals three times a week, featuring combinations of different nutrients.
The prepared meals include fortified nutri sweet daliya, fortified moong dal khichdi, fortified plain wheat daliya, fortified premix food, upma premix, sweetened rice crisps, salted rice crisps, among other food items.
“We have learned from anganwadi workers that children are not liking the taste of sweetened rice crisps, daliya, upma, khichdi, among other food items. These food items were chosen keeping in mind the different types of nutrients that children can get, but because of taste preferences, we are planning to change some of the recipes,” said a senior official from the department.
Officials mentioned that the committee will collaborate with nutritionists and medical health professionals to make changes.
“The taste and recipe of food items given in neighbouring states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat are being studied,” added the official.
Officials also said that they aim to incorporate vegetables, dairy fats like ghee, among other items to enhance the taste of the food.
In 2022, the changes were made with the aim of providing food in such a form that only children and pregnant women can use it to get the nutritional benefits.
